LTE-V2X

LTE-V2X

LTE-V2X, short for Long Term Evolution-Vehicle-to-Everything, is the initial commercial version of Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology evolved from fourth-generation mobile communication (4G LTE). Serving as the core technology for direct communication across Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P), LTE-V2X resolves the inherent limitations of conventional onboard sensors—such as restricted sensing range and blind spots caused by physical obstructions—making it a pivotal technological foundation for active road safety.

Technical Principles and Architecture

The defining strength of LTE-V2X lies in its direct communication (PC5 interface) capability. Vehicles and roadside infrastructure can communicate on a direct peer-to-peer basis over a dedicated 5.9 GHz frequency band without routing through cellular base stations. This architecture ensures hazard warnings can be broadcast independently even in blackspot areas without cellular coverage, such as tunnels and remote mountainous stretches, overcoming the physical line-of-sight constraints of optical cameras.

Its key performance benchmarks deliver robust support for active safety applications:

  • Ultra-low latency: End-to-end latency for V2V and V2P is capped within 100 milliseconds, dropping to as low as 20 milliseconds in critical scenarios such as forward collision warnings.

  • Long-range communication: Direct communication range spans between 300 and 500 metres.

  • High-speed scenario support: Operates reliably at relative vehicle speeds of up to 500 km/h, covering all high-speed highway mobility conditions.

Standardisation Milestones and Industry Positioning

The technical specifications for LTE-V2X were spearheaded by Chinese technology leaders including Datang and Huawei, and were officially finalised and ratified under 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) Release 14. This marked the first time China took the helm in establishing international connected vehicle standards, enabling the domestic industry to eliminate reliance on US-led DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications) technology whilst securing the upper hand in intellectual property and supply chain foundations.

From a technology evolution standpoint, LTE-V2X is currently the primary workhorse for large-scale commercialisation, while the more advanced NR-V2X (based on 5G New Radio) serves as the next-generation enhancement to support advanced use cases such as vehicle platooning and autonomous remote driving; both will coexist and complement each other moving forward.

Industry Landscape: From "Pilot Trials" to "Mandatory Standard Fitment"

Over recent years, the deployment of LTE-V2X was bogged down in a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma between connected vehicles and smart road infrastructure. With vehicle-side penetration lingering below 1%, investments in roadside units (RSUs) struggled to yield returns, bringing infrastructure rollouts to a near standstill.

This stalemate is being fundamentally broken by mandatory national standards. The "Technical and Management Requirements for Operational Safety of Commercial Vehicles" (Draft for Comments), overseen by the Ministry of Transport, explicitly stipulates that: all newly registered commercial passenger vehicles, lorries, and related fleet vehicles must come factory-fitted with an LTE-V2X direct communication-based telematics interaction system. This represents the first time that factory-fitted C-V2X mass production is enforced by statutory mandate, signalling a decisive shift in the market from "voluntary adoption" to "mandatory standard equipment".

Industry projections indicate that commercial lorries alone will drive an annual demand of 2.1 million to 2.5 million units for standard-fit LTE-V2X onboard terminals, unlocking guaranteed growth opportunities across the entire automotive supply chain.

Important Note: At the current stage, LTE-V2X functions as an advanced driver-assistance and cooperative perception system, and its operational effectiveness depends heavily on the penetration rate of surrounding road users and roadside infrastructure coverage. Drivers must not become complacent or neglect active scanning of their driving environment due to reliance on V2X systems, and remain solely responsible for overall vehicle safety at all times.
