Brand Overview

Peugeot is a core brand under the French Peugeot Citroën Group, founded in 1896, with origins tracing back to 1848, when the Armand Peugeot family established an industrial workshop in Paris. The brand logo is a lion, combining elements of the family crest and the Montbéliard provincial emblem, symbolizing strength, speed, and elegance. The brand headquarters is located in Sochaux, France, and the brand belongs to the Stellantis Group (established in 2021 through the merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). Peugeot has established sales networks in 160 countries worldwide, with 10,000 sales outlets, making it one of Europe's longest-standing automotive manufacturers.

As one of the pioneers in the history of the global automotive industry, Peugeot ranks among the oldest automotive brands in the world alongside Mercedes-Benz and Ford. Peugeot was once involved in many manufacturing sectors—hardware tools, household ware, telescopes, hunting rifles, sewing machines, etc.—and automobile manufacturing was never the entirety of Peugeot's history. In 1889, Peugeot launched its first steam-powered car; production of fuel-driven automobiles began in 1890. In 1929, Peugeot pioneered its innovative model naming system using three-digit numbers with a central "0," a tradition that continues to this day. In 1934, Peugeot launched the 402 Eclipse, the world's first mass-produced hardtop convertible. In 1976, Peugeot merged with Citroën to form the PSA Group. In 2012, Peugeot introduced the i-Cockpit® interior concept, integrating a small steering wheel, head-up display, and touchscreen, creating a unique design language for cockpit layout and human-machine interaction.

Development History

Industrial Foundation and Opening of the Automotive Era (1848—1918). In 1848, the Armand Peugeot family first produced hardware tools such as coffee grinders and saw blades in an industrial workshop in the suburbs of Paris; the "Peugeot Brothers Company" was established in 1876. In 1889, Peugeot launched the first steam-powered three-wheeled automobile named "Peugeot", becoming one of the earliest automotive enterprises to explore motorized mobility, and produced the first four-wheeled fuel automobile Type 2 powered by a Skoda Daimler gasoline engine the following year. In 1896, Armand Peugeot founded the "Peugeot Motor Company", specializing in automobile production, clearly separating it from the Peugeot Brothers Company's hardware and bicycle business.

The Era of Classic Models and the Start of Globalization (1919—1975). After World War I, Peugeot entered a channel of rapid development, successively launching classic models from Type 161 Quadrilette to 201. In 1929, the 201 premiered globally at the Paris Motor Show, and Peugeot formally established the naming rule of three digits with a zero in the middle, a naming system still used today. The 401 Eclipse launched in 1934 was the world's first mass-produced hardtop convertible, pioneering convertible car structure design. After the war, Peugeot kicked off its recovery with the 203 series, followed by the 404 (1960), 204 (1965), and 504 (1968), all of which became globally best-selling models.

Joining Forces with Citroën and Forming the PSA Group (1976—2020). In 1974, Peugeot acquired 30% shares of Citroën; in 1976, both parties formally merged to form the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group. In 1978, PSA acquired Chrysler's European business, and Peugeot's most famous compact car 205 appeared in 1983. On May 18, 1992, China's Second Automotive Works (now Dongfeng Motor Corporation) and the French Peugeot Citroën Group jointly established Dongfeng Peugeot Automobiles Co., Ltd. with registered capital of 7 billion RMB, each holding 50% shares. This was the second largest joint venture project in the history of China's automotive industry after Shanghai Volkswagen.

Integrating into Stellantis (2021 to Present). In January 2021, the PSA Group and the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Group merged with a 50:50 share ratio to form the Stellantis Group, and the Peugeot brand was subsequently merged into the world's fourth-largest automotive manufacturer. Since then, Peugeot has promoted the "E-LION" electrification strategy globally. The 2025 model 3008 and 5008 were developed first based on the STLA Medium platform, offering hybrid and pure electric versions; the third-generation Peugeot 208 is expected to be launched in 2026, based on the STLA Small platform, and will offer only pure electric versions.

Product Portfolio

Peugeot brand's product system covers categories such as sedans, SUVs, and sports cars, divided into multiple power routes including fuel, pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and mild hybrid, with current main models already electrified or hybridized.

Sedans: The Peugeot 208 is a sales mainstay of the brand in the European market, focusing on the compact hatchback market; in February 2022, the 208 series led sales in the European compact sedan market. The all-new third-generation 208 is built on the STLA Small platform, retaining only the pure electric version, equipped with steer-by-wire systems and a rectangular steering wheel. The Peugeot 308 is the core product of the brand's compact sedan, offering fuel, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric versions, where the pure electric version E-308 has a range of up to 410 km (WLTP). Official overseas images of the all-new Peugeot 408 have been released; the corresponding domestic model is the 408X, offering various power forms including gas-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric. The Peugeot 508 is positioned in the mid-to-high-end sedan market, having undergone multiple revisions since its 2011 launch and released versions such as the 508L and 508L PSE.

SUV and Crossover: The Peugeot 2008 is positioned as a small pure electric/fuel SUV; the pure electric version E-2008 introduced V2L technology first. The Peugeot 3008 is the core contribution model for the brand's global SUV sales; the 2025 model is developed based on the STLA Medium platform, comprehensively offering fuel, hybrid, and pure electric power versions, adopting the i-Cockpit digital cockpit and fastback crossover design. The Peugeot 5008 is positioned as a mid-to-large 7-seat SUV, also developed based on the STLA Medium platform; the pure electric version E-5008 offers two range versions, up to 700 km, supporting V2L function. The Peugeot 4008 is a compact SUV exclusively supplied in China, historically corresponding to the differentiated product line of the overseas 3008.

Flagship Concept Cars and Future Products: At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, Peugeot globally premiered two intelligent electric flagship concept cars—Peugeot Concept 6 "Lion Sharp" smart luxury sedan and Peugeot Concept 8 "Luminous" next-generation full-size intelligent SUV, previewing the new intelligent electric mass-produced model sequence to be launched starting in 2027.

Racing Sports: Peugeot returns to the track with the 9X8 hybrid racing car, which adopts a four-wheel-drive transmission and a wingless design, competing in the 2026 season FIA World Endurance Championship with a new livery.

Market Performance

Global Market: Peugeot is one of the core sales contribution brands of the Stellantis Group. In 2025, the Stellantis Group sold 5.484 million vehicles globally (excluding joint ventures), achieving net revenue of 153.5 billion euros. Peugeot firmly controls the dominant position in the European market, with sales in the French home market reaching 15,885 vehicles in July, holding a market share of 13.6%, while also maintaining a stable market position in Germany, Spain, and other Western European countries. However, the Stellantis Group's 2025 financial report presents substantial challenges—net revenue of 153.5 billion euros dropped slightly year-on-year by 2%; net profit attributable to ordinary shareholders had a large loss, mainly due to sales decline in the North American market and high costs required for electrification transition; the problem of high inventory reserves also affected Peugeot's quarterly performance in some European markets to a certain extent. In the first quarter of 2026, Stellantis Group net revenue was 38.1 billion euros, a 6% year-on-year increase, net profit was 377 million euros (net loss of 387 million euros in the first quarter of 2025), adjusted operating profit was 960 million euros, a 194% year-on-year increase, operating profit margin was 2.5%, shipment volume was 1.36 million vehicles, a 12% year-on-year increase; as a main sales support in the Stellantis multi-brand matrix, Peugeot's market demand gradually warming up promoted shipment volume to stabilize and rise.

China: The fall of Dongfeng Peugeot (dual brand of Peugeot and Citroën) in the Chinese market is one of the most dramatic joint venture brand cases of this era. In 2015, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobiles Co., Ltd. annual sales exceeded 710,000 vehicles, firmly established in the mainstream camp of domestic car companies, models such as Fukang, Elysée, and Peugeot 307 became car memories for a generation. Subsequently, sales continued to decline: in 2022 it broke through the 100,000 vehicle mark; in 2025 the full year was only 51,500 to 73,000 vehicles (different statistical approaches), a drop of more than 90% compared to peak times, market share shrank to 0.2%. French cars retail sales in China in 2025 were only 42,000 vehicles, the combined retail sales of Peugeot and Citroën brands for the whole year were less than the monthly sales of a mainstream brand's single hot model. Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobiles Co., Ltd. consecutively missed the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, 2024 Beijing Auto Show, and 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, entering a factual "silent adjustment period". There have been long-term disagreements between Dongfeng and Stellantis on strategic direction—Stellantis tends to regard China as a procurement and R&D base for technology and supply chain; Dongfeng hopes the brand can truly return to localization and capture the China market share. After years of gaming, they reached a new strategic consensus around 2026.

At the 2026 Auto China, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobiles Co., Ltd. returned high-profilely after three years, with Dongfeng Peugeot globally premiering the Peugeot Concept 6 and Peugeot Concept 8 intelligent electric concept cars, releasing the new brand commitment "With Sincerity, Pursue Joy", clarifying the strategic transformation route of "Made in China, Sold Globally". In the first two months of 2026, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobiles Co., Ltd. cumulative sales were about 7,800 vehicles; due to the base still being low, it is not yet sufficient to be regarded as a complete recovery signal. Whether the brand can climb out of the valley depends on whether the intelligent electric models launched in 2027 and subsequent years can truly solve core pain points such as "high pricing, low configuration, weak intelligence" in the past.

Core Technology

Peugeot's technology system relies on Stellantis Group's four electrification vehicle platforms (STLA Small, Medium, Large, Frame), combined with the E-LION electrification strategy, to build a new generation of electric drive architecture.

STLA Platform: The dedicated pure electric platform developed by the group for A-class to C-class compact vehicles; its greatest feature is a wider battery pack capacity range, adaptable to different specifications from 37kWh to 82kWh. The third-generation Peugeot 208 will be the first mass-produced model on the STLA Small platform, adopting steer-by-wire systems and a rectangular steering wheel.

STLA Platform: The main electrification platform for C-class and D-class models, with E-3008 and E-5008 both based on this platform. The full series is equipped with 400V or 800V high-voltage architecture, maximum range can reach 700 km (WLTP), supporting fast charging and V2L function. The E-5008 adopts a long-wheelbase design providing 7-seat layout, meeting family travel needs.

Electric Drive and Battery Technology: The E-208 is equipped with a 115kW (156 hp) permanent magnet synchronous motor, available battery capacity 48.1kWh, WLTP range 400 km. The E-308 is equipped with the same power system, WLTP range 410 km (pure electric version).

Smart Cockpit and Chassis Technology: The Peugeot i-Cockpit was first launched in 2012, integrating a small steering wheel, head-up display, and central control touchscreen. Future new vehicles will be equipped with an upgraded i-Cockpit Cocoon Cockpit and industry-leading high-level assisted driving systems. Peugeot's chassis tuning has over a century of technical accumulation, originating from the Le Mans champion racing car gene, balancing sporty handling and ride quality.

Global Presence

Peugeot globally uses Europe as its hinterland and emerging markets as increments, with distribution and manufacturing networks covering more than 100 countries and regions. Europe is Peugeot's core home market; Western European countries such as France, Germany, Spain, and Italy maintain stable market share. The Middle East-Africa market saw significant growth in the 2025 Stellantis regional data, and Latin American market trends continue to improve.

In China, Peugeot deeply integrates the China intelligent electric industry chain and Stellantis global chassis and design advantages through the joint venture company Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobiles Co., Ltd., making China one of the core production bases for the brand's electrification transition. Dongfeng Peugeot plans to launch new intelligent electric SUV and sedan series starting from 2027, and utilizes the global layout and channel resources of both shareholders to achieve "Made in China, Sold Globally".

Future Outlook

The Peugeot brand is at a critical juncture of "repositioning" and "setting off again." At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, Brand Global CEO Alain Favey clearly stated that the Chinese market is a core part of Peugeot's global strategy. The brand will continue to increase its investment, deeply integrate into China's intelligent and electrified industrial ecosystem, make China an important production base for Peugeot's electrification transition, and help Peugeot achieve its global development goal of exceeding 500,000 overseas sales by 2030.

The year 2027 is a critical node for product launches—Dongfeng Peugeot will introduce its first new intelligent electric mass-production model (sedan and SUV series). Subsequently, the brand will gradually expand its complete product lineup while launching the "Co-creation for Friends Plan," inviting users to participate deeply in product definition, design iteration, and service optimization.

In the technology dimension, Peugeot has established a new path where design is the soul, technology is the wings, and a global vision is the perspective. On one hand, it relies on the two pure electric platforms—STLA Medium and STLA Small—to continuously refine its pure electric product matrix. On the other hand, it continues its century-old chassis and handling tuning heritage, fully maintaining its persistent pursuit of driving pleasure. From the mass production of new vehicles in 2027 to feeding the global market with "Made in China," Peugeot's electrification transition will fully enter a new stage of deep validation and competitiveness testing.
