Model Overview

The Volvo ES90 is a pure electric executive flagship saloon globally unveiled by Volvo Cars in March 2025. Serving as the second model built on the dedicated SPA2 EV architecture following the EX90, it marks the next phase of Volvo's full electrification strategy. Positioned as a "Nordic luxury pure electric flagship saloon", the ES90 highlights Scandinavian design, an ultra-long driving range, top-tier safety, and an immersive cabin experience as its primary selling points. The model officially went on sale in China on 29 May 2026, offered in two variants: the rear-wheel drive Long Range Plus and the dual-motor all-wheel drive Performance Ultra, with limited-time introductory prices ranging from RM389,900 to RM459,900. Its key rivals include executive luxury EV saloons such as the BMW i5, Mercedes-Benz EQE, Audi A6 e-tron, and NIO ET7.
Design Language
The ES90 carries forward Volvo's hallmark Scandinavian minimalist design philosophy. Up front, it features a closed-off "Shield" grille flanked by the signature Thor's Hammer LED headlights (with 1.3-million-pixel HD matrix units on higher-spec trims), reinterpreting iconic brand cues with modern flair. Along the sides, a sleek profile is defined by an upward-sweeping "Bond curve" originating from the B-pillar, seamlessly blending with a fastback silhouette to achieve both an elegant stance and aerodynamic efficiency. Round the back, a liftback tailgate design is complemented by sequential dynamic LED tail lamps integrated with rear windscreen LED lighting, creating a distinctive welcome light animation.
In terms of dimensions, the ES90 measures 5,000 mm in length, 1,942 mm in width, and 1,553 mm in height, with a generous 3,102 mm wheelbase. It boasts an ultra-low drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd. Boot capacity stands at 409 litres, expanding to 1,445 litres with the rear seats folded, alongside a 27-litre front trunk (frunk).
Inside, the cabin embraces a "Nordic living room" concept, centred around a 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment display and a 9-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by backlit natural bamboo wood trim and eco-friendly sustainable materials. The panoramic glass roof blocks up to 99.9% of UV rays, with an electrochromic dimming roof available as an option.
Powertrain and Performance
Built on the native SPA2 pure electric architecture, the ES90 runs on a full 800V high-voltage electrical system and comes in two powertrain configurations:
Rear-Wheel Drive Long Range Plus: Powered by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 245 kW (approx. 333 PS) and 480 Nm of torque. Paired with a 92 kWh battery pack, it delivers a CLTC-rated range of 777 km and completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.6 seconds.
Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive Performance Ultra: Powered by a dual-motor AWD setup delivering a combined output of 500 kW (approx. 680 PS) and 870 Nm. Paired with a 106 kWh battery pack, it achieves a CLTC range of 848 km and hits 0-100 km/h in a blistering 3.9 seconds.
The EV supports up to 350 kW DC fast charging, replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes, or adding roughly 300 km of range in just 10 minutes (WLTP cycle).
Chassis and Handling
The ES90 adopts an all-aluminium chassis construction to significantly reduce unsprung mass. For suspension hardware, the RWD variant comes standard with front and rear Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) shock absorbers, while the AWD Performance variant gains intelligent dual-chamber air suspension paired with the 4C active adaptive chassis, scanning road surfaces 500 times per second to continuously adjust damping for an optimal balance of ride comfort and handling. Volvo's global engineering team conducted 28 rounds of meticulous fine-tuning to guarantee refined and precise driving dynamics across all road conditions.
Cabin and Equipment
Thanks to its long 3,102 mm wheelbase, rear passengers enjoy exceptionally generous legroom. The rear seats feature power adjustment with backrest recline angles ranging from 25° to 33°, complete with standard seat heating and ventilation. The digital cockpit is driven by a next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon platform, supporting 5G connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and full-scenario voice command capabilities.
Three premium audio choices are offered, headlined by the flagship Bowers & Wilkins sound system featuring 25 speakers (including headrest and height-channel speakers) with an output of 1,610 W, supporting 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos and an exclusive Abbey Road Studios mode. The advanced cabin air purification system filters out 95% of PM2.5 particulates and 99.9% of allergens, certified as asthma- and allergy-friendly.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety remains the central pillar of the ES90. The structure uses a high-strength safety cage where the A-, B-, and C-pillars are reinforced with 1,500 MPa boron steel, delivering a 60% boost in torsional rigidity over the S90.
In terms of active safety, the ES90 is Volvo's first production model powered by dual NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin system-on-chips (SoCs), generating a total compute capacity of 508 TOPS. The comprehensive sensor suite includes 1 LiDAR unit, 5 radar sensors, 7 cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, providing situational awareness beyond human vision. Volvo's Pilot Assist system comes standard, supporting highway and urban navigation assistance, adaptive cruise control, and automated parking. Additionally, the Driver Understanding System (DUS) continuously monitors driver focus, providing three-stage alerts and automated emergency stop intervention if required.
Battery safety is thoroughly addressed via a boron-steel protective enclosure, multiple reinforcement cross-members, and an ultra-thick 10 mm aluminium alloy underbody shield. In extreme collisions, the high-voltage system can be isolated within 3 milliseconds, while an in-house developed BMS provides 24/7 battery health monitoring.
Market Outlook and Reception
The ES90 represents Volvo's first locally built pure electric saloon on the SPA2 platform, signifying the marque's official foray into the executive luxury EV segment. Against key competitors like the NIO ET7 (CLTC range: 705 km), BMW i5 eDrive40 (CLTC range: 570 km), and Audi A6 e-tron (CLTC range: approx. 720 km), the ES90 holds tangible advantages in driving range (848 km), wheelbase length (3,102 mm), and fast-charging capability (20-minute rapid top-up). Automotive industry observers note that while the ES90 matches top-tier EV benchmarks on paper, market acceptance will largely hinge on consumer reception of its crossover-esque saloon proportions, as well as whether its software ecosystem can maintain continuous OTA upgrade competitiveness. Serving as Volvo's flagship electric saloon, the ES90 stands alongside the EX90 to anchor the brand's dedicated EV flagship line-up.
