Malaysia-bound NA5 BMW iX3: Euro NCAP five stars in latest and more demanding 2026 test protocol

The Malaysia-bound NA5 BMW iX3 has received the top five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in Europe, making it one of the first models to be assessed under the organisation’s more demanding 2026 test protocol.

The result matters because Euro NCAP has significantly expanded how it measures safety. Instead of focusing mainly on occupant protection and assistance systems, the latest procedure now covers the full sequence of a real-world incident, from preventing a crash to protecting people during impact and helping them after the collision.

BMW said the iX3 comfortably cleared the threshold for five stars and exceeded the required score margin in all four new areas: Safe Driving, Crash Avoidance, Crash Protection and Post Crash Safety.

The iX3 is the first production model from BMW’s Neue Klasse family, and its performance in Euro NCAP is intended to demonstrate the brand’s current safety approach across active and passive systems.

In the Safe Driving category, the iX3 scored 73 per cent. Euro NCAP highlighted the standard driver-assistance package for helping the driver stay aware of surrounding traffic, while the Speed Limit Info system was also noted for strong performance on a cross-border test route of around 2,000 km through Italy, France, Germany and Austria, where it correctly identified the speed limit on 97 per cent of the route.

Euro NCAP also gave a positive assessment to the combination of physical controls for key driving functions, the central display for infotainment and comfort settings, and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant voice control. The child-left-behind detection function was also recognised.

For Crash Avoidance, the iX3 achieved 83 per cent. That result reflects systems such as Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, along with exit warning technology that alerts occupants to cyclists approaching from behind before they open the door.

The strongest area was Post Crash Safety, where the iX3 recorded 95 per cent. Euro NCAP said the model’s emergency call functions, high-voltage battery safety measures and access features for first responders all contributed to the result.

Particular attention was paid to the flush-fitting electrically operated door handles. Euro NCAP confirmed they worked reliably after all crash tests, and that occupants could still exit the vehicle while rescuers could access it from outside, even if electrical systems failed. BMW said this is supported by mechanical redundancy in the opening system.

The iX3 also posted 86 per cent for Crash Protection. Euro NCAP awarded maximum points for the protection of child test dummies in the rear seats in an asymmetric frontal collision, while side-impact performance was also strong. The standard central airbag helped prevent the front occupants from striking each other in a crash.

These results were achieved under Euro NCAP’s most extensive protocol update since the combined star-rating system was introduced in 2009. The organisation says the new framework places greater emphasis on real-world scenarios and the way modern safety technology performs beyond controlled crash tests. 

Closer to home, the Registration of Interest (RoI) page for the NA5 BMW iX3 is already live, hinting at an imminent arrival.
