All-new Mazda CX-5 to launch in Malaysia on 8 October, expected from RM 160k

The third-generation Mazda CX-5 is officially set to launch in Malaysia on 8 October.

The new C-segment SUV was already previewed at KLIMS 2026, but with the launch date now confirmed, the wait for Mazda's next-generation family SUV is almost over.

Here are the three key changes to know about the new CX-5.

More room, especially in the rear

The CX-5 has always had plenty going for it, but rear-seat space has never been one of its strongest points. Mazda has addressed that with the new generation, which gets a substantial increase in size.

The wheelbase has grown by 115 mm, while the body is also longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model.

I had a chance to sit in the new CX-5 at KLIMS, and the extra length is immediately noticeable in the rear. Knee room no longer feels tight, while the boot also gets a lower opening and a more usable shape.

A more modern cabin

Inside, Mazda has moved away from the relatively conservative dashboard of the current CX-5 and given the new model a much more modern layout.

A 15.6-inch touchscreen now takes centre stage, and the new CX-5 is the first in the range to offer Google built-in services.

Some physical controls have been reduced, but the overall cabin feels much more in line with modern infotainment systems.

Higher-grade two-tone leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and a Bose sound system also give the interior a more upmarket feel.

2.5-litre petrol power and i-Activ AWD

The new CX-5 is expected to be offered with a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, with different markets getting either a 24V mild-hybrid system or a non-hybrid version.

Depending on specification, outputs are listed at 141 hp and 238 Nm for the mild-hybrid version, or up to 179 hp and 240 Nm without the hybrid system.

The engine is paired with Mazda's six-speed automatic transmission, with i-Activ all-wheel drive.

Mazda's familiar focus on steering response and chassis balance remains part of the CX-5 formula, so the new model is still expected to retain the driving character that has helped set it apart from other C-segment SUVs.

Estimated pricing

The all-new Mazda CX-5 attracted plenty of attention during its KLIMS 2026 preview, and current estimates put the starting price at around RM 160,000.

That would put the new model above the current CX-5 (KF), which starts from RM 135,669.

The price increase will be worth watching, but the new CX-5 also brings a longer wheelbase, more interior space and a much more modern cabin.

The final specifications, equipment and pricing will be announced when the all-new Mazda CX-5 launches in Malaysia on 8 October.
