Audi A2 e-tron debuts: Brand's most efficient EV offers up to 646 km range, from RM 195k

Audi has officially unveiled the all-new all-electric hatchback, a fully electric hatchback that the company says is its most efficient production model to date.

The new EV is built around low aerodynamic drag, low energy consumption and a choice of battery sizes, adding another model to Audi's growing electric line-up.

Bookings are expected to open on 10 September, with first deliveries scheduled for December. In Germany, prices start from €38,200 (~RM 195,000).

Exterior: Fastback shape, low drag

The Audi A2 e-tron has a fastback-style body with a slightly raised stance and a rounded overall shape. Short front and rear overhangs help keep the proportions compact while leaving more room inside.

With a drag coefficient of 0.24, the A2 e-tron records the lowest figure in Audi's small sedan class, according to the company.

Audi has worked on details including an active cool-air intake, an almost fully enclosed underbody, newly developed aerodynamic wheels and gap reducers between the tire and the wheel arch.

The wing-shaped powered door handles use tactile sensors and sit flush with the bodywork, keeping the side profile clean while making them easier to operate.

Audi also claims a new efficiency benchmark for its production cars. The 140 kW A2 e-tron fitted with the optional efficiency package has a WLTP combined energy consumption of just 12.8 kWh/100km.

Compact outside, spacious inside

The A2 e-tron measures around 4.32 metres long, but has a 2,770mm wheelbase, giving it relatively short bodywork for the amount of space between the axles.

The cabin uses Audi's Softwrap treatment, with soft fabric surfaces extending from the dashboard into the doors and rear section of the cabin. A 1.6-square-metre panoramic glass roof is also available, with a special coating designed to block ultraviolet radiation.

The dashboard centres around Audi's MMI panoramic display, consisting of an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus and a 12.8-inch curved MMI touchscreen. An AI-powered Audi assistant and the e-tron route planner are also included.

The Audi connect office system integrates Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams and an AI-based work assistant, allowing occupants to stay connected while travelling.

The A2 e-tron also introduces Audi's first factory-fitted Fidlock magnetic mounting system, allowing items (like cup holders and charging cable bags) to be secured in place with a simple click.

Standard driver-assistance equipment includes emergency braking assist, collision avoidance assist, driver attention assist, adaptive cruise control, enhanced parking assist and a reversing camera.

Range and charging

The A2 e-tron will be offered with several battery and powertrain combinations. The higher-output version uses an 84 kWh NMC battery and has a claimed WLTP range of up to 646 km.

The 84 kWh version supports DC charging at up to 183 kW, with a claimed 10–80% charging time of 29 minutes under ideal conditions.

Audi also offers bidirectional charging across the range, including V2L (vehicle-to-load) and V2H (vehicle-to-home) functions. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the car can be used as a home battery when connected to a compatible DC wallbox.

Four power outputs, three batteries

Audi will offer the A2 e-tron with four power outputs ranging from 125 kW to 240 kW, with up to 545 Nm of torque.

All variants use a permanent-magnet synchronous motor driving the rear wheels, complete with four regenerative braking modes, including a one-pedal driving mode via the B gear selector.

The battery range includes 52 kWh, 61 kWh and 84 kWh options. The 52 kWh and 61 kWh batteries use cell-to-pack LFP technology, while the 84 kWh NMC battery is aimed at versions requiring greater range and performance.

Built in Ingolstadt

Production of the A2 e-tron takes place at Audi's headquarters in Ingolstadt, where the factory makes use of more than 1,200 existing production components and around 250 robots. The plant also uses a Pearl Chain production principle to improve manufacturing efficiency.

Additionally, more than 300 components in the new EV are made using recycled materials, depending on specification, as part of Audi's wider focus on circular production.

The A2 e-tron will initially be launched in Europe, and its potential availability in other markets remains to be seen.
