It is offered in just a single variant – the Premium – priced at RM100,000. There are no lower or higher trims to mull over, nor are there optional packages to calculate; it is strictly one price, one car. Behind this “less is more” strategy lies BYD's sharp understanding of budget-conscious buyers: for those with a firm budget ceiling, choice paralysis is the biggest pain point.

Year-to-date in 2026, the Atto 2 has recorded 663 registrations in Malaysia, ranking 66th among the nation's best-selling models. While not groundbreaking, this steady upward sales trajectory represents healthy momentum for an entry-level electric SUV that has been on the market for barely over a year.

Market positioning

The Atto 2 is a five-seater all-electric B-SUV measuring 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, and 1,675 mm tall, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase.

It is RM700 cheaper than the BYD Dolphin Standard (RM100,700), RM5,800 lower than the base Proton eMas 7 Prime (RM105,800), and nearly RM19,000 more affordable than the Leapmotor B10 Design (RM118,800).

In other words, the Atto 2 is one of the most accessible electric SUVs on sale in Malaysia today. Yet, accessible does not equate to bare-bones; glancing through its equipment list reveals a surprisingly generous kit.

Single-variant product strategy

Many carmakers tend to spread a nameplate across three or four variants, using a stripped-down base trim to advertise an attractive entry price while banking on top-spec variants to drive margins. BYD has taken the opposite approach with the Atto 2: offer just one variant, but ensure it is thoroughly equipped.

A 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 6-speaker Dirac sound system, power-adjustable front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, single-zone automatic climate control, dual USB ports for both front and rear rows, a 360-degree camera, and a 50W wireless charging pad are all standard.

Stacked together, this is far from looking like a base-spec car.

BYD's rationale is crystal clear: buyers in this segment do not want to be bogged down by complex spec sheets; they simply want “a single car that has everything they need, at a transparent price”. Going by 2026 registration figures, this strategy has proven sound in the Malaysian market.

Powertrain & performance

Powering the Atto 2 is a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor rated at 174 hp and 290 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.9 seconds on its way to a 160 km/h top speed.

For an EV meant primarily for urban commuting, this range capability means that if you travel 30 km to 50 km daily, a single charge per week is more than sufficient. However, if long-distance outstation trips like KL to Penang are regular routines, a mid-journey charging stop will be necessary.

Performance-wise, 174 hp delivers sprightly off-the-line response in urban traffic, and highway overtaking is effortless. While a 7.9-second 0-100 km/h time is modest by EV standards, it is more than punchy enough for everyday driving.

Charging

Via a 7 kW AC charger, a full charge from 0 to 100% takes about 8 hours. Plugging in overnight at home and waking up to a full battery the next morning is the ideal routine.

For DC fast charging, it accepts up to 82 kW, taking around 28 minutes to juice up from 30% to 80%. While not benchmark-setting in 2026, it is wholly acceptable given the car's price point and segment.

Another handy feature is the 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. If you enjoy camping, picnics, or need to run power tools on the go, this capability is invaluable. BYD backs the Atto 2 with a 6-year / 150,000 km vehicle warranty, an 8-year / 160,000 km Blade battery warranty, and an 8-year / 150,000 km drive unit warranty.

This package sits above the market average in Malaysia, with the 160,000 km battery mileage cap offering an extra 10,000 km of peace of mind over several competitors.

Competitor comparison

The Proton eMas 7 Premium Plus retails at RM125,800 (RM118,800 after rebates), offering a 68.39 kWh battery, a 450 km WLTP range, a more spacious cabin, and higher equipment levels – but commands a premium of nearly RM19,000 over the Atto 2.

Meanwhile, the Leapmotor B10 Design is priced at RM118,800, boasting a rear-wheel-drive setup, 218 PS, a 434 km WLTP range, and 168 kW DC fast charging that does 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes – more than twice as fast as the BYD.

The Atto 2's core edge is its entry price, being the only contender here to hit the RM100,000 sweet spot. While its range and charging speeds trail pricier rivals, it makes up for it by offering immense value for money.

Verdict

If you have a strict budget of around RM100,000, your driving routine consists largely of city commutes and short intercity trips, you have easy access to home or workplace AC charging, you do not demand extreme range or rapid charging speeds, and you want an EV that is well-equipped, safe, and cheap to run, then the Atto 2's single-variant strategy works in your favour.

There is no need to study trim hierarchies; at RM100,000, you get a fully loaded car ready to drive away.

However, if regular cross-country highway runs are on your agenda, faster DC charging is a priority, or you need extra rear legroom and cargo capacity, the Proton eMas 7 and Leapmotor B10 remain more compelling choices – provided you are willing to top up another RM10,000 to RM20,000.

The Atto 2 is by no means flawless. Its 345 km WLTP range is modest by 2026 standards, its 82 kW DC charging is relatively average, and it goes without a powered tailgate or panoramic sunroof, with hard plastics dominating the cabin trim.

Yet, at RM100,000, it checks virtually every fundamental box expected of a modern electric SUV. For budget-focused buyers seeking an urban daily driver, it stands out as an exceptionally pragmatic buy.
