CATL is targeting small-scale production of all-solid-state batteries in 2027, as the Chinese battery maker continues to advance its research into the technology.
The company confirmed its latest target on 28 October in response to an investor query, saying its solid-state battery development is among the most advanced in the industry.

Despite the progress, CATL chairman Robin Zeng has warned that the technology is still some way from mass production.
Speaking at the "No Power, No AI" forum during the 2026 Annual Meeting of the New Champions (2026 Summer Davos) in Dalian, Zeng rated the industry's progress at Level 4 on a nine-level scale. He said the technology would need to reach Level 9 before it was ready for mass production.

Zeng also highlighted the challenges beyond the technology itself. Before solid-state batteries can be rolled out commercially, manufacturers must secure a reliable supply chain and demonstrate that the batteries meet safety and reliability requirements.
Market demand will be another key factor. Even if the technology is ready, large-scale commercialisation will depend on whether consumers are willing to adopt it and whether manufacturers can bring it to market in sufficient volumes.
