Honda City Hatchback RS vs Honda City Sedan RS in Malaysia: Modular Ultra Seats or 519 litres of boot space for RM1,000 less?

There is just a RM1,000 difference between the two price tags. The Honda City Hatchback 1.5 Petrol RS retails at RM100,900, while the City Sedan 1.5 RS is priced at RM99,900.

At the same showroom, both share the identical 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine pushing 119 hp and 145 N·m, paired with the same CVT gearbox, and both complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 10.7 seconds.

Honda Sensing comes standard on both, alongside six airbags, LaneWatch, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera. Road tax is RM90 annually for each, and both are backed by an eight-year, unlimited-mileage warranty applicable to new cars registered from September 2026 onwards.

A RM1,000 difference barely reflects on the spec sheet, but how you use the boot and rear seats sets them worlds apart.

Boot Space and Rear Seats

The Sedan offers a 519-litre boot. You can easily fit three 28-inch suitcases horizontally with extra room for duffel bags, and a full-size stroller slides right in without folding.

Meanwhile, the Hatchback’s cargo capacity stands at 289 litres, which fills up quickly with two 28-inch bags, and a stroller must be folded to fit.

However, the Hatchback features Honda’s versatile Ultra Seats. The seat bases can flip upright, allowing tall potted plants, folding bicycles, or even a small cabinet to stand upright right off the floor pan.

Fold the front passenger seat flat, and you can even haul extra-long cargo. The Sedan, on the other hand, only offers 60:40 split-folding rear backrests; while this extends into a neat boot area, the seat bases do not flip up, nor can the front seats recline flat into a lounge mode.

Neither cargo layout is objectively superior. If your daily routine involves large suitcases, strollers, or hefty weekend grocery hauls, the Sedan’s 519 litres is simply more straightforward—no fiddling with seats required.

For the occasional tall cargo, plant run, or folding bike, the Hatchback’s Ultra Seats unlock modular versatility that the Sedan simply cannot match. Yet, if those needs arise only a few times a year while regular boot runs make up the rest, the Sedan’s cavernous boot proves more hassle-free.

Dimensions and Everyday Manoeuvrability

The Hatchback measures 4,369 mm in length, whereas the Sedan stretches to 4,594 mm—a 225 mm difference, roughly the span of an adult's open hand plus part of the forearm.

That figure might look minor on paper, but in tight shopping mall parking bays, narrow old-town streets, or tight residential lanes, the Hatchback’s 22.5 cm reduction translates to fewer three-point turns and effortless parking every day.

The Sedan’s extra length is dedicated almost entirely to its rear overhang. With an identical 2,600 mm wheelbase, there is no real difference in rear legroom between the two. The Sedan’s edge is not about passenger room; it is purely about luggage capacity.

Equipment and Features Almost Identical

Equipment levels on both RS variants are largely mirrored. The Honda Sensing suite comes standard, bringing Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Lane Departure Warning, alongside blind-spot monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

A 10-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto comes standard on both. The 7-inch TFT instrument display, 16-inch dual-tone alloys, and 360-degree camera system are also identical across both RS models.

Subtle variations come down to just a few kit items. The Sedan RS gains automatic wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and Honda Connect telematics. For the Hatchback RS, availability of these items depends on local specification, so do verify with official dealers.

Both models get full Bi-LED headlamps, with the RS trims sporting an extended light bar. Rear air-con vents are standard across the range, present in both cars.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Under the bonnet sits the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 119 hp and 145 N·m, mated to a CVT gearbox. Both claim an official combined fuel economy of 5.6 litres per 100 km. The 0-100 km/h run takes an identical 10.7 seconds.

Warranty and Resale Value

The eight-year unlimited-mileage warranty covers both models equally.

On the resale front, public market data pegs the three-year residual value of the City range at around 72.2%. As a newer body style in this lineage, the Hatchback commands a slightly more niche secondary market, though Honda hatchbacks hold strong appeal among younger buyers.

The Sedan enjoys higher trading volume in the used market and generally sells faster, but the margin is hardly large enough to dictate your purchase. A RM1,000 price gap will not create any tangible difference in long-term depreciation.

Which One Should You Buy?

The City Sedan RS is tailored for buyers who regularly haul bulky cargo and hate tumbling seats. Its 519-litre fixed boot accommodates luggage, strollers, and grocery runs without any seat-folding gymnastics—just chuck it in and drive away.

Small convenience features like automatic rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror also save you a few manual adjustments in daily commutes. Its main trade-off is the extra overall length, demanding a touch more wheel work in narrow urban lots.

The City Hatchback RS suits drivers who frequently park in congested city centres or occasionally need to carry tall, bulky items. The Ultra Seats provide unmatched cargo modularity that no traditional sedan can deliver, while being 22.5 cm shorter makes daily parking and U-turns an absolute breeze.

Its downside is the default 289-litre boot space, meaning larger holiday luggage trips require advance planning or sacrificing rear passenger seating.

The RM1,000 price gap does not translate into mechanical or specification divides. Your decision should not be about budget, but about how you actually use your boot. If your daily life revolves around suitcases and grocery bags, the Sedan’s 519 litres will serve you well every single day.

If your boot usually sits empty, but you occasionally need to fit an awkwardly tall or bulky item that simply will not squeeze into a sedan boot, the Hatchback’s Ultra Seats will prove invaluable.
