
Proton’s upcoming AMA02-based model has been spotted again, giving us another look at what is likely to become the Proton Saga Cross.
Photos of the heavily camouflaged test vehicle was posted on Threads, with the disguise still hiding most of its design details. Even so, its raised stance, compact footprint and long-roof profile suggest a crossover positioned below the Proton X50.

Speaking of the Proton X50, these spyshots also hint that the Saga Cross could adopt a kink in the window line, mirroring the Proton X70 and Proton X50.
The prototype appears to feature a relatively long wheelbase, short overhangs and a steeply rising rear window line. At the back, there is a roof-mounted spoiler and what looks like a horizontally oriented tail-lamp arrangement, although the camouflage makes it difficult to confirm the final design.
As for the powertrain, earlier reports suggest that Proton could offer the Saga Cross with two 1.5-litre options.
The entry-level versions are expected to use a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, reportedly producing around 120 PS and 150 Nm. Depending on the final specification, drive could be sent to the front wheels through an automatic transmission. Whether or not the lower-specced Saga Cross variants adopt a 4AT or CVT automatic remains to be seen.

More importantly, the AMA02 could become Proton’s first production model to receive the company’s new petrol-electric hybrid system. The reported 1.5-litre HEV setup pairs a naturally aspirated engine with a dedicated hybrid transmission featuring integrated electric motors.
Earlier information points to a possible output of up to 120 kW, or around 163 PS, for the hybrid variant. However, Proton has yet to confirm whether this system will be offered on the Saga Cross.

The AMA02 model is reportedly being developed as a compact A-segment crossover, with trial production expected to precede full production later this year. A late-2026 debut could be on the cards too.
