Spied: Chery's EMTA electric K-Car spotted testing, Japan launch planned for 2027

Chery is preparing to enter Japan's kei car market with a new electric model under its EMTA brand. A camouflaged prototype has now been spotted testing ahead of its expected launch in 2027.

Designed specifically for Japan, the small EV adopts the familiar boxy proportions of a K-Car, with a short front overhang to make better use of its compact footprint.

Sliding rear doors are another practical feature, making access easier in tight parking spaces and suiting everyday tasks such as school runs and shopping.

The model is said to be developed under EMTA, a new EV brand established by Chery and Chinese partners including Jiangsu Yueda. Built around the "Daily Magic" concept, EMTA is focused on electric vehicles for everyday use.

While the new car is tailored to the Japanese market, its development will draw on Chery's existing technology, including its electric powertrain control systems, vehicle architecture and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Production will initially take place at the Yueda plant in Yancheng, China. Local assembly in Japan could be considered at a later stage, depending on market response.

Rather than building its own retail network from scratch, EMTA plans to work with Autobacs, the Japanese automotive accessories and services chain, to handle local sales and aftersales support.
