Toyota bZ4X Buyer's Guide: RM220k for Toyota's first electric SUV, is a single variant enough?

After a wait of over three years, Toyota has finally rolled the bZ4X into Malaysian showrooms. On 2 April 2026, the facelifted bZ4X officially went on sale as a sole front-wheel-drive variant. Fully imported (CBU) from Japan, it carries an on-the-road (OTR) price tag of RM220,000 without insurance.

Battery capacity has expanded from 71.4 kWh to 73.1 kWh utilising NMC cells, stretching the WLTP-rated range from 436 km to 525 km. A jump of nearly 90 km is remarkably generous for a mid-life update.

Charging is where the most practical leap lies.

AC charging capability has more than tripled from 6.6 kW to a beefy 22 kW. Plugged into a 22 kW AC home wallbox, juicing up from 10% to 100% takes roughly 2.2 hours. DC fast charging holds steady at 150 kW, doing the 10% to 80% state of charge in about 28 minutes.

Having 22 kW AC onboard gives it a genuine edge in this price bracket, where many rivals still linger at 7 kW or 11 kW.

Not Showy, But Covers All Bases

Inside, a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster.

Also fitted are a fixed panoramic glass roof, 8-way power front seats with memory, dual-zone auto air conditioning with rear vents, 64-colour ambient lighting, a power tailgate, a digital rearview mirror, and dual wireless phone charging pads.

Audio specs remain disputed locally, with mentions of either a 6-speaker layout or a 9-speaker JBL setup; buyers are advised to confirm with their dealer.

Safety is where Toyota delivers its signature comprehensive suite. There are 8 airbags, including a front centre airbag and a driver's knee airbag.

The BYD Sealion 7 retails at RM163,800 for the Dynamic, RM188,800 for the Premium, and RM203,800 for the Performance. Within this budget, you can bag the top-spec Sealion 7 Performance AWD, dishing out 523 hp, 690 Nm, a 4.5-second century sprint, a 91.39 kWh battery, and 230 kW DC fast charging that goes from 30% to 80% in just 18.5 minutes.

Meanwhile, the XPeng G6 is priced at RM158,888 (Standard Range), RM178,888 (Long Range), and RM189,888 (AWD Performance). With an 800V architecture, the G6 completes a 10%-80% DC charge in as little as 12 minutes and boasts a 16-speaker XOpera audio system as standard.

Then there is the Tesla Model Y, which kicks off at RM195,450 for the base RWD and RM216,450 for the Long Range RWD.

Strictly on spec-for-spec value, the bZ4X does not hold the upper hand in this price bracket. An output of 227 PS at RM220,000 is hardly headline-grabbing.

Yet, the bZ4X offers what others cannot.

Dimensions and Practicality

The bZ4X measures 4,690 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall, with a generous 2,850 mm wheelbase. Boot space is rated at 452 litres, expanding to 850 litres with the rear seats folded. It carries a kerb weight of 2,020 kg, has 180 mm of ground clearance, and turns in a neat 5.6-metre turning radius.

Verdict

This electric SUV suits a specific profile: buyers who swear by Toyota's bulletproof build quality and fuss-free durability, and have no need for gimmicky in-cabin screens or blistering straight-line pace.

You have or plan to install a 22 kW AC wallbox at home, rely almost exclusively on home charging, and rarely bother with public DC fast chargers. Most importantly, you intend to keep the car for a decade or more, prioritising battery health and peace of mind over novelty features that fade in a couple of years.

If your heart is set on sheer acceleration, massive screens, branded audio, or massaging seats, the Sealion 7 Performance or XPeng G6 AWD Performance comfortably offer more metal for the money. If Tesla's tech ecosystem and Supercharger network appeal to you, the Model Y Long Range RWD at RM216,450 is a formidable alternative.

Toyota's single-variant strategy with the bZ4X is about keeping things straightforward. It delivers an unpretentious, well-rounded drive, channelling its strengths into what Toyota values most: proven reliability, day-to-day charging convenience, and low long-term ownership costs.
