2026 BYD Atto 3 buyer's guide: Is the RM13k upgrade for 800V and RWD worth paying?

The BYD Atto 3 is Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV), with over 12,000 units delivered since its local debut in late 2022. In June 2026, the facelifted Atto 3 made its ASEAN premiere, with Malaysia receiving the full European-spec “Evo” upgrade, chalking up 1,000 bookings within just 10 days of launch.

What makes this facelift truly distinctive is that the two variants are separated not simply by equipment levels, but by two fundamentally different vehicle architectures.

Market positioning

In the electric SUV segment, the Atto 3 currently contends primarily with the Leapmotor B10 and the GWM Ora Good Cat. The B10 offers a rear-wheel-drive layout at a lower price point, while the Ora Good Cat banks on retro-chic styling.

The Atto 3 sets itself apart through superior brand equity, tried-and-tested Blade Battery technology, and a more comprehensive ADAS suite.

Pricing & variants

The Ultra (FWD) is tagged at RM125,800, whereas the Premium (RWD) retails at RM138,800—representing a price premium of RM13,000.

Both are fully imported (CBU) models and currently come with an early-bird launch package worth up to RM14,000, which includes RM10,000 trade-in support alongside a choice of either a free AC wallbox charger (inclusive of installation) or six years of free servicing.

Powertrain

The Ultra carries over the familiar front-wheel-drive powertrain, powered by a front-mounted motor producing 204 PS (150 kW) and 310 Nm, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.3 seconds. Paired with a 60.48 kWh Blade Battery, it delivers a WLTP-rated range of 420 km and supports 110 kW DC fast charging.

The Premium transitions to an all-new rear-wheel-drive setup. Its rear-mounted electric motor pushes out 313 PS (230 kW) and 380 Nm—an extra 109 PS and 70 Nm over the Ultra—slashing the 0-100 km/h sprint down to just 5.5 seconds, with top speed raised to 180 km/h.

Battery capacity expands to 74.88 kWh, extending WLTP range to 510 km, while peak DC charging capacity doubles to 220 kW, enabling a 10% to 80% top-up in just 25 minutes.

Behind the wheel, the disparity is stark. The Ultra delivers ample shove for everyday city driving, though its 7.3-second sprint is fairly standard fare for an EV.

The Premium’s 5.5-second benchmark elevates it into performance crossover territory, with the rear-wheel-drive dynamics delivering noticeably crisper turn-in and superior traction when powering out of corners.

Chassis & handling

Underneath, the Ultra retains the familiar front MacPherson strut and rear four-link independent suspension. The Premium upgrades to front dual-ball joint MacPherson struts and a rear five-link arrangement.

The five-link rear setup exercises significantly tighter control over wheel articulation and toe angles under hard cornering; combined with the rear-wheel-drive chassis, it delivers a level of ride composure and handling precision a class above the Ultra.

Cabin space

The Ultra offers 434 litres of boot space, expandable to 1,340 litres with the 60:40 rear backrests folded.

By shifting the drive unit to the rear axle, the Premium unlocks additional luggage space, boasting a 490-litre boot that expands to 1,360 litres, plus a handy 101-litre front trunk (frunk).

This dedicated frunk is perfect for stowing portable charging cables, tyre inflators, and tools, freeing up the main boot for day-to-day shopping and luggage.

Equipment

Both variants uses a 15.6-inch fixed central touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 50W wireless smartphone charging pad, a panoramic roof, and ventilated front seats.

Cabin differences centre on seating adjustments: the Ultra gets a 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and a 4-way power front passenger seat, whereas the Premium steps up to a 6-way power driver’s seat with 4-way lumbar support, alongside a 6-way power passenger seat.

The Premium also benefits from dual-zone automatic climate control versus the Ultra’s single-zone system. While seemingly minor on paper, the added lumbar support makes a tangible difference on long highway stints across the PLUS Expressway.

Safety suite & ADAS

On the safety front, the Ultra comes with six airbags, while the Premium increases the count to seven with the addition of a front centre airbag.

Both variants receive Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and seatbelt reminders for all occupants as standard.

Setting itself apart, the Premium adds Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA), Front Cross Traffic Braking (FCTB), and Intelligent Speed Limit Control (ISLC).

Charging

BYD is actively rolling out its ultra-fast Flash Charge network in Malaysia, with peak power ratings reaching up to 1.5 MW, kicking off across Denza showrooms before a wider nationwide deployment.

For the Premium, its high-voltage 800V architecture and 220 kW DC charging capability allow owners to maximise these mega-chargers, bringing turnaround times very close to a traditional petrol refuelling stop.

The Ultra peaks at 110 kW DC, where its 400V system acts as a bottleneck on ultra-rapid chargers. For domestic wallbox charging, both cars feature an onboard 11 kW AC charger.

Verdict

Go for the Ultra (RM125,800) if:

Your driving is predominantly urban commuting and routine errands, you have little need for rapid off-the-line pace, and your priorities lie squarely in the Atto 3’s cabin packaging, solid brand track record, and capping your budget cleanly below the RM126k mark.

Its 420 km WLTP range is more than sufficient for everyday Malaysian driving, and 204 PS is plenty for urban cut-and-thrust and trunk-road overtaking. Pocketing the RM13,000 difference will comfortably fund years of home charging and motor insurance renewals.

Step up to the Premium (RM138,800) if:

You regularly embark on interstate road trips, or you place a premium on rapid charging and dynamic driving engagement. The additional 109 PS, rear-drive balance, sophisticated five-link rear axle, 800V electrical architecture, and 510 km range represent genuine, high-value mechanical enhancements.

With a 10-80% charge done in just 25 minutes, paired with BYD’s expanding DC fast charging network, long-distance range anxiety is virtually eliminated.

If you intend to run the Atto 3 as your primary household car for the long haul, the Premium’s cutting-edge 800V platform guarantees it will remain thoroughly modern for years to come.
