Since its launch, the BAO brand's development path has been full of dramatic twists, experiencing the whole process of a high-profile debut and a dim exit.
High-profile Birth (2021): In 2021, Baoneng Motor Group reached a strategic cooperation with the Guangzhou Development District, received strategic investment from state-owned enterprises as high as 12 billion RMB, and announced that the headquarters was officially established in Guangzhou. In June of the same year, the BAO brand was officially launched, with the name "Baoneng Motor". The future blueprint depicted at the time seemed ambitious, and it also invited design master James Hope, who had served for Ford, GM, and other car companies, to join and serve as the head of styling.
Debut as a Swan Song (2022): In January 2022, after six months of silence, BAO finally unveiled the face of its first mass-produced model at a new car appreciation meeting, namely the all-electric crossover SUV - BAO GX5 (internal code GX16), and announced that it would provide 700km and 800km range versions. Baoneng promised at that time that the GX5 would be off the production line in July 2022.
Dilemma and Silence (2022 - Present): The ideal blueprint was shattered by reality. By the second half of 2022, the mass production plan for BAO GX5 eventually turned into bubbles. Media and public attention was more attracted by the unpaid wage scandal of the sectors under Baoneng Group, and the new car project also eventually stalled. Since then, news about the termination of BAO GX5 R&D and the dissolution of the team has continued to emerge. This "savior" brand, once relied upon, fell into long-term silence, and the official website has not released any new news.
Different from BYD Fang Cheng Bao's "blooming of multiple cars", Baoneng BAO's product line is extremely lacking.
BAO GX5 (GX16): This is the only model of the BAO brand that appeared in public, but it was never launched. It is a pure electric crossover SUV, adopting a closed front face and through-type lighting group design style. According to early planning, GX5 will launch two versions with two power layouts: rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive: the standard version has a range of 700 km, 0-100km/h acceleration within 8 seconds; the high-performance version has a range of 800 km, 0-100km/h acceleration within 4.5 seconds. The official also claimed that the vehicle will be equipped with the independently developed BN Pilot intelligent driving assistance system and virtual AI driving assistant. With the project stagnating, this car ultimately only left a few teaser images and parameter sheets.
BAO's "market performance" was actually a tragedy of zero sales. GX5 never entered the mass production stage, and there has never been a single data point for the BAO brand in the production and sales records of the Chinese automotive market.
Its core problem lies in the dual collapse of funds and trust. Due to negative news such as the liquidity crisis of the parent company Baoneng Group and unpaid employee salaries, the confidence of potential dealers and consumers was seriously affected, and finally, its grand plan of 16 new cars did not land anywhere. Although the official claimed to have invested huge funds in new car R&D, it did not bring any mass-produced car that can legally be driven on the road.
Baoneng BAO once promoted its independently developed BN Pilot Intelligent Driving Systemand independently developed Battery Power Technology. However, these technologies have never been verified on mass-produced vehicles, and their technical authenticity has been controversial due to the early stall of the project.
The footprint of Baoneng BAO brand going global was almost a blank. From its establishment to the project stall, it was always in the product R&D phase, and had not even ventured into the development and promotion of overseas markets.
As of 2026, the Baoneng BAO brand has basically become a name without substance. Although there are occasional rumors about Baoneng Auto seeking a successor or business transformation, the BAO brand itself no longer has the ability and conditions for revival.
Its only "legacy" might be providing factory resources that can be integrated for new forces such as NIO Auto seeking production capacity. The story of BAO provided a valuable lesson for the Chinese automotive industry: Capital may be able to quickly mature a brand, but there is no shortcut to replace solid engineering investment and respect for manufacturing itself.
