BYD M6

2026-10-03 14:20:00

Model Overview

The BYD M6 is a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) produced by BYD Auto. Its lineage spans two distinct generations: the first-generation model debuted on 20 July 2010 as an executive MPV powered by 2.0L and 2.4L naturally aspirated petrol engines, priced officially from RM139,800 to RM239,800 with an aerodynamic "bullet" silhouette reminiscent of the Toyota Previa. Following lacklustre domestic sales, it was subsequently phased out of production.

In 2024, BYD resurrected the M6 nameplate as a fully electric MPV. In July 2024, the all-new electric M6 made its global debut at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), marking it as the first fully electric MPV in the Indonesian market. In September of the same year, the EV officially launched in Bangkok, Thailand. By 2025, the M6 EV was showcased at the Bangkok International Motor Show and expanded into Hong Kong, Singapore, and various other Southeast Asian markets.

The vehicle is built upon the domestic market's BYD Song MAX DM-i platform. Measuring 4,710 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,690 mm in height with a 2,800 mm wheelbase, the overseas-spec M6 is classified as a compact MPV. It is available in 6-seater (2+2+2) and 7-seater (2+3+2) layouts, positioning generous cabin space, competitive driving range, and Blade Battery safety credentials as its core USPs against established petrol-powered rivals like the Toyota Innova and Mitsubishi Xpander, as well as emerging electric contenders. In Thailand, the Dynamic variant retails at THB 829,900 (approx. RM174,000), while the Extended variant is tagged at THB 929,900 (approx. RM195,000). In Hong Kong, indicative pricing starts from approximately HKD 299,500.

Design Language

The all-new BYD M6 adopts the Dynasty series' signature "EV Dragon Face" design language, giving it a sleek and commanding road presence. The front fascia features an aerodynamic closed-off grille complemented by a full-width chrome trim strip and prominent "BYD" lettering, delivering a clean, tech-forward aesthetic. Flanking the front are sharp starlight LED headlamps that integrate seamlessly with the lower bumper intake for an aggressive stance. Along the sides, a defined character line runs end-to-end to create a poised profile, paired with blacked-out pillars for a floating roof effect. The rear styling mirrors the Song MAX, featuring smoked full-width LED combination taillights joined by a chrome strip, complemented by a prominent roof spoiler and lower bumper garnishes to complete its sporty profile.

Inside, the overseas-spec M6 has been converted to right-hand drive (RHD) configuration, showcasing a clean and structured cabin architecture. The centre console is dominated by a signature 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment display, housing navigation, multimedia, and vehicle settings with seamless, intuitive control. The cabin is trimmed in a dual-tone black and beige palette, differentiated from the Chinese-market Song MAX by bespoke dashboard inlays, contrast seat stitching, and gear selector detailing. A panoramic glass roof is fitted to flood the interior with natural light.

Powertrain & Performance

The all-new BYD M6 is offered in two powertrain configurations to suit varied customer requirements.

Variant Max Power Max Torque Battery Capacity NEDC Range 0-100 km/h
Dynamic (Standard) 120 kW (approx. 163 PS) 310 Nm 55.4 kWh 420 km N/A
Extended (Long Range) 150 kW (approx. 204 PS) 310 Nm 71.8 kWh 530 km Approx. 8.6 seconds

Both variants utilise a front-mounted single permanent magnet synchronous motor driving the front wheels (FWD). Rated power consumption is roughly 12 kWh per 100 km. The entire range comes standard with BYD's proprietary Blade Battery, renowned for its industry-leading thermal safety and energy density.

On the efficiency front, selected market data indicates a WLTP-rated range of approximately 440 km for the entry variant. For charging, the Dynamic supports up to 85 kW DC fast charging, whereas the Extended variant accepts up to 115 kW, enabling a 30% to 80% state of charge in around 30 minutes. AC charging tops out at 7 kW via a Type 2 inlet. Additionally, a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power supply system with a maximum output of 3.3 kW comes standard-fit across the range to run external electrical appliances.

Chassis & Handling

The all-new BYD M6 is engineered around a front-wheel-drive platform. It rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension—a sophisticated setup rarely seen in this MPV price bracket that delivers an optimal balance between road holding and ride comfort for rear occupants. The damping is tuned for suppleness, soaking up road undulations effortlessly.

Stopping power is courtesy of front ventilated discs and rear solid discs. It features an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, alongside standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control System (TCS). The MPV rides on 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/55 R17 tyres. Steering is managed via an electric power steering (EPS) rack. Top speed is rated at 180 km/h, with a turning radius of 5.8 metres and a kerb weight ranging between 1,780 kg and 1,895 kg.

Cabin & Equipment

On the tech front, the 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen runs BYD’s intelligent operating system with voice control, GPS navigation, and in-car karaoke microphone capability. The infotainment system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity (subject to market specification).

For seating arrangements, the 6-seater variant features individual second-row captain chairs with folding armrests, while the 50:50 split-folding third row allows boot space to expand flexibly from 180 litres to 580 litres. Equipment highlights include keyless entry with push-start button, panoramic glass roof, Qi wireless smartphone charger, automatic LED headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding heated side mirrors, and a powered tailgate. A high-fidelity audio system and a PM2.5 air filtration system are also included.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance

In terms of passive safety, the all-new BYD M6 is built around a high-tensile passenger cell and comes standard with dual front airbags, front side airbags, and full-length curtain airbags. Active safety is comprehensive with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, incorporating:

System Category Features
Collision Warning Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Intelligent Speed Limit Information (ISLI), Rear Collision Warning (RCW)
Active Intervention Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, Intelligent Speed Limit Control (ISLC)
Monitoring & Vision Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), 360-degree Surround View Camera

Following its Thai debut, the MPV was heralded as setting "a new safety benchmark for family mobility". Regional specifications also highlight Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability.

Market Performance & Reception

Since its regional debut across Southeast Asia in late 2024, the all-new BYD M6 has garnered significant market traction thanks to its zero-emissions drivetrain, generous packaging, long-distance capability, and proven Blade Battery reliability. In Thailand, it became an instant media highlight upon debut, with local motoring press praising it as an MPV "tailored specifically to the lifestyle needs of modern Thai families with impressive performance, cavernous space, and generous smart kit". In Hong Kong, the vehicle launched in mid-to-late May 2024 with an entry indicative price of around HKD 299,500, positioning itself as an enticing entry-level electric MPV alternative to traditional petrol people-movers with lower on-the-road entry costs and reduced running expenses.

In Indonesia, April 2026 sales charts saw the BYD M6 capture second place among best-selling EVs with 2,472 units delivered, cementing its status as a top choice among family buyers. Singaporean motoring publication Sgcarmart noted that while "it won't set a petrolhead's pulse racing, its blend of practicality, range, and accessible price point makes for an exceptionally compelling proposition".

Overall, BYD's move to revive the M6 badge for global markets has proven fruitful. The M6 now serves as a key pillar in BYD's international line-up alongside the ATTO 3, SEAL, and Dolphin, leveraging EV differentiation to capture market share in an ASEAN MPV segment long dominated by Japanese marques.
