Chery Omoda E5

2026-10-18 06:50:00

The Chery Omoda E5 is an all-electric compact SUV under Chery's OMODA sub-brand, serving as the pure electric derivative of the petrol-powered Omoda 5. The EV made its regional debut in Indonesia in early 2024 before making its Chinese premiere at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. Built primarily for export markets, the Omoda E5 serves as a crucial strategic model in Chery’s global electrification push. As of June 2026, its official indicative pricing in the Chinese market is reportedly between RM152,800 and RM182,800. Its key rivals include the BYD Yuan PLUS and AION Y Plus.

Design Language

Styling-wise, the Omoda E5 retains the sleek coupe-SUV silhouette of the petrol-powered Omoda 5 while introducing bespoke EV design cues. Up front, the conventional radiator grille has been replaced by a clean, closed-off front fascia that gives the car a sharper, more futuristic look. The front Chery emblem makes way for prominent "OMODA" wordmark lettering across the nose. The signature split headlamp setup remains—with slim LED daytime running lights up top and the main LED projector headlamp clusters housed below. The side profile is distinguished by a floating roofline, a sloping fastback silhouette, flush door handles, and aero-optimised alloy wheels. At the rear, the full-width LED light bar and sporty rear bumper treatment are carried over from the petrol variant. In terms of dimensions, the EV measures 4,424 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, and 1,588 mm tall, riding on a 2,630 mm wheelbase. Its minimum turning radius is rated at 5.45 metres. Exterior colour choices include Meteor Grey, Aurora Green, and Stardust Red.

Inside, the Omoda E5 sports a clean and contemporary cabin architecture. The dashboard is headlined by a dual-screen setup comprising twin 12.3-inch (or 10.25-inch) screens for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. The traditional gear lever on the centre console has been swapped for a steering column-mounted electronic gear selector, freeing up valuable storage space. The interior is available in dual-tone colour schemes, complemented by integrated sports bucket seats finished in a stylish blue-and-white theme. Ambient lighting with 64 selectable colours is standard throughout the cabin.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the skin, the Omoda E5 features a front-mounted single-motor setup driving the front wheels (FWD). The propulsion unit is a permanent magnet synchronous motor, available in two distinct states of tune depending on the market. The standard output version delivers 150 kW (around 204 PS) and 340 Nm of torque, while an entry-level version produces 99 kW. The official century sprint (0–100 km/h) takes 7.5 to 7.6 seconds, on to a top speed of 172 km/h. Juice comes from a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. On the range front, it achieves 430 km under the WLTC test cycle, and between 401 km and 550 km under the CLTC standard. Energy consumption is rated at 15.5 kWh/100 km. When it comes to charging, the vehicle supports 80 kW DC fast charging that replenishes the battery from 30% to 80% in 28 minutes; regular AC charging is rated at 9.9 kW, requiring around 8 hours for a full recharge.

Chassis & Handling

Chassis hardware on the Omoda E5 consists of a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup. Braking is handled by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear, paired with an electric parking brake (EPB). It rides on 215/55 R18 tyres. The suspension tuning leans towards the firmer side, delivering confidence-inspiring body control when tackling bends. Drivers can cycle through three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. Eco mode prioritises brisk initial torque delivery with lighter steering, whereas Sport mode offers sharper, more immediate throttle response.

Cabin & Equipment

On the tech front, the Omoda E5's dual-screen infotainment is powered by the benchmark Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset. The system natively supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Front occupants enjoy power-adjustable seats equipped with seat ventilation. Acoustic duties are handled by an 8-speaker SONY premium sound system. The lower tier of the centre console houses a wireless smartphone charging pad and USB ports. Rear passengers benefit from a flat floor, dedicated rear air conditioning vents, and USB charging outlets. Boot space stands at 380 litres in standard guise, expandable to 1,075 litres (with some sources citing 1,340 litres) with the rear seats folded down. In addition, there is a 19-litre front boot (frunk) under the bonnet for smaller items. The car also features a facial recognition system and an intelligent voice command assistant.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

In the safety and active driving aid department, the Omoda E5 is comprehensively equipped with 5 cameras, 4 surround-view cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. This hardware suite supports a Level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), offering features such as Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). The SUV also comes with automated park assist and remote parking assist capabilities. Standard passive and active safety gear includes a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and other essential stability controls.

Market Performance & Verdict

The Omoda E5 represents a vital strategic spearhead in Chery’s overseas expansion. The electric crossover has already made inroads into international markets such as Indonesia, the UK, and Singapore. In the UK, the Omoda E5 starts from £33,055, while in Indonesia it retails for around IDR 498.8 million (approx. NT$993,000). In China, despite its public premiere at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, the model remains heavily export-driven to date. The key selling points of the Omoda E5 lie in its dynamic coupe-SUV styling, snappy in-car operating experience powered by the Snapdragon 8155 chip, punchy 7.6-second 0–100 km/h acceleration, and an extensive tech spec sheet for an electric SUV in the RM150,000 price range. On the flip side, rear cabin space is somewhat penalised by the sloping fastback roofline, while the shorter rear seat cushions leave under-thigh support slightly wanting; the infotainment user interface could also benefit from further streamlining, as several key functions require clicking through multi-layer menus. Overall, the Omoda E5 is a compelling all-electric SUV targeted squarely at the younger demographic, leveraging its "stylish design + smart technology" proposition; while it has made a solid initial impression in overseas markets, its performance in China remains one to watch.
