Model Overview

The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is the second mass-production model under Hyundai Motor's dedicated EV sub-brand, IONIQ, positioned as an all-electric mid-size fastback sedan. Built on the Hyundai Motor Group's dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), it made its global debut at the Busan International Motor Show in South Korea on 14 July 2022. In November 2022, the IONIQ 6 made its official China debut at the 5th China International Import Expo. In terms of dimensions, the standard version measures 4,855 × 1,880 × 1,495 mm (L × W × H) with a 2,950 mm wheelbase. In April 2025, the IONIQ 6 received a mid-lifecycle facelift, introducing an N-Line styling package and an 84 kWh battery pack. Price-wise, the facelifted model starts from 48.56 million KRW (approx. RM250,000) in South Korea; the Taiwan market offers three variants: EV400 (NT$1,699,000), EV600 (NT$1,999,000), and EV600 Performance (NT$2,199,000).

Design Language

The exterior styling of the IONIQ 6 draws heavily from the Prophecy Concept, featuring sleek, minimalist curves to sculpt a streamlined body. Up front, it sports a semi-enclosed grille integrating slim air intakes. The bonnet features prominent character lines, complemented by a split headlamp setup—ultra-slim Parametric Pixel LED daytime running lights sit up top, while the main beam units are positioned lower on either side of the bumper. Following the 2025 mid-lifecycle facelift, the N Line variant gains a more aggressive three-piece lower apron with enlarged air ducts featuring fang-like inserts and a central trapezoidal intake. Along the sides, a sweeping fastback roofline is paired with flush pop-out door handles, while the rear features a full-width Parametric Pixel LED light bar and a prominent bootlid spoiler. The aerodynamic profile yields a remarkably low drag coefficient of Cd 0.21.

Inside, the cabin embodies Hyundai's "Mindful Cocoon" design philosophy. The dashboard is dominated by a dual 12.3-inch widescreen setup comprising a digital instrument cluster and a central infotainment touchscreen. It features a three-spoke, flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel, while the gear selector has been relocated to a column-mounted electronic shift stalk. Dedicated displays for the digital side mirrors are integrated at both ends of the dashboard. Eco-friendly and recycled materials are used extensively throughout the interior, including recycled PET fabric. The ambient lighting system offers dual-colour 64-colour customisation with 6 pre-set themes, allowing for up to 4,096 distinct illumination combinations.

Powertrain & Performance

The IONIQ 6 is offered in both single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations:

  • Entry-level Single-Motor RWD: Produces 151 PS (approx. 111 kW), completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.8 seconds.

  • Long Range Single-Motor RWD: Produces 228 PS (168 kW), completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.4 seconds.

  • Dual-Motor AWD: Delivers a combined output of 325 PS (approx. 239 kW) and 605 Nm of torque, completing 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds.

Battery options include 53 kWh and 77.4 kWh capacities. The Long Range variant achieves a WLTP combined range of 610 km. The 2025 facelift introduced a larger 84 kWh battery pack, extending the WLTP range to 700 km. Underpinned by an 800V high-voltage electrical architecture, the IONIQ 6 supports up to 350 kW DC fast charging, juicing from 10% to 80% SoC in just 18 minutes. A 1.9 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power supply function comes as standard.

The high-performance IONIQ 6 N made its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 10 July 2025. Powered by a dual-motor AWD powertrain, it delivers a standard output of 448 kW (approx. 609 PS), which temporarily climbs to 478 kW (approx. 650 PS) and 770 Nm of torque when N Grin Boost is activated. This slashes the 0-100 km/h sprint time to just 3.2 seconds. Energy is supplied by an 84 kWh battery pack. The model was crowned World Performance Car of the Year at the 2026 New York International Auto Show.

Chassis & Handling

Underpinned by the dedicated E-GMP EV platform, the IONIQ 6 rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear five-link independent suspension setup. Both axles are fitted with frequency-sensitive high-performance dampers. A near-perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution and a low centre of gravity provide exceptional dynamic balance. Steering is handled by a rack-mounted motor-driven power steering system (R-MDPS) paired with an integrated drive axle (IDA), delivering direct steering feedback and linear power delivery. Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control comes standard, enhancing cornering grip by modulating motor torque and applying targeted inner-wheel braking. Drive modes include ECO, Comfort, Sport, and Snow. Dual-motor AWD variants feature a Disconnector Actuator System (DAS), which decouples the front motor under light throttle loads to optimise energy efficiency.

The IONIQ 6 N receives a bespoke chassis overhaul—featuring Electronic Control Suspension (ECS) dampers that adjust damping forces in real time based on road conditions. It adds dedicated performance systems such as N Drift Optimiser and N Torque Distribution, alongside an upgraded N e-Shift Virtual Gear Shift (VGS) system and an N Active Sound+ sound synthesiser. Its dimensions expand to 4,935 × 1,940 × 1,495 mm, with an extended wheelbase of 2,965 mm.

Cabin & Equipment

The cockpit features dual 12.3-inch screens (digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen) with customisable interfaces. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, while Bluetooth allows simultaneous pairing of two smartphones. Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates are supported. Higher-spec variants come equipped with an 8-speaker BOSE premium audio system (including a subwoofer). The slimline front seats are purpose-built for electric vehicles, measuring around 30% thinner than conventional seats. Steering wheel styling details were also revised in the 2025 mid-lifecycle update.

In terms of convenience amenities, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear air vents, powered front seats, an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, and a hands-free powered tailgate come standard across the range. Stepping up to the EV600 variant adds 20-inch bespoke alloy wheels and the BOSE sound system. The cabin provides four USB-C ports and one USB-A port. Digital side mirrors are offered as standard fitment in selected markets.

Safety & Driver Assistance

The IONIQ 6 comes standard with the comprehensive Hyundai SmartSense ADAS suite. Core driver aids comprise Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go (SCC), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). Active collision mitigation systems include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) with vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist detection, FCA Junction Turning (FCA-JX), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA), and Driver Attention Warning (DAW). It also features High Beam Assist (HBA) and Safe Exit Warning (SEW).

The Level 2 Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) system combines inputs from the front camera, radar sensors, and navigation data to regulate cruising speed and following distance, keep the car centred in its lane, and execute automated lane changes when the indicator is engaged. Higher trim grades add a Surround View Monitor (SVM), Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), and Remote Smart Parking Assist 2.0 (RSPA 2.0). Passive safety is well covered by 7 airbags, including a front-centre side airbag.

Market Performance & Reception

Since its launch in 2022, the IONIQ 6 garnered substantial global attention thanks to its aerodynamic styling, E-GMP platform architecture, and 800V fast-charging capabilities, securing 37,446 pre-orders on its first day of launch alone. However, global market performance has diverged sharply. In North America, sales momentum remained sluggish—registering around 10,000 units in 2023; full-year US sales in 2025 stood at 10,478 units, down 15% year-on-year; in February 2026, monthly deliveries plummeted to just 229 units, a 77% drop year-on-year. In March 2026, Hyundai confirmed that the standard IONIQ 6 would be discontinued in the US market, retaining only the high-performance N variant. Key factors behind this move include tariff headwinds on South Korean imports and American buyers' overwhelming preference for SUVs. In its home market of South Korea, recent monthly sales have likewise fallen short of expectations. In China, the IONIQ 6 has not been locally produced and is sold only in limited volumes via import channels.

Despite headwinds in certain global markets, the IONIQ 6 has maintained strong industry acclaim for its distinctive proposition, with the high-performance IONIQ 6 N bagging the prestigious 2026 World Performance Car title. Key competitors for the IONIQ 6 in the segment include the Tesla Model 3, BYD Han EV, and XPeng P7i. Blending retro-streamlined aesthetics, dedicated E-GMP electric architecture, 800V ultra-fast charging, and N performance DNA, the IONIQ 6 carves out a unique niche in the electric executive sedan segment through its distinctive design philosophy and engineering.
