Mahindra is one of India’s largest multi-purpose automobile manufacturers, affiliated with the diversified Indian conglomerate Mahindra Group. Founded in 1945 and headquartered in Mumbai, the group’s automotive business covers passenger cars, commercial vehicles, electric tricycles, and exports. Mahindra obtained ISO 9001 certification in 1996 and is currently the second-largest automobile manufacturer in India. Its market share in the Indian SUV market has doubled since 2020, reaching 27.3%, maintaining a long-standing leading position. Beyond automobiles, the group’s business extends to information technology, financial services, aerospace, and other sectors. Additionally, Mahindra is the world’s largest tractor brand by production volume.

Development History

Mahindra was co-founded by Indian brothers and Mohammed in the steel trading industry in 1945. It entered the automotive industry in 1955 by launching its first joint-venture assembled Jeep model. In its early years, the company focused on producing light commercial vehicles, multi-purpose off-road vehicles, and tractors. During the 1970s and 1980s, it established a strong foundation in the utility vehicle market through the Bolero pickup truck. In 2002, Mahindra entered the high-end part-time four-wheel-drive SUV market with the Scorpio. In 2011, it acquired a 70% equity stake in South Korea’s SsangYong Motors to accelerate overseas technology synergy. In 2020, the Thar achieved significant success, igniting a brand revival. After Anish Shah assumed the role of Group CEO in 2021, the company divested multiple loss-making businesses, focused on SUV pure electric transformation, and achieved a rebound in both profit and market share. In 2025, it launched series models such as the 7-seater XEV 9S based on the INGLO pure electric platform. SUV monthly production capacity further increased in FY2026, with comprehensive sales breaking 660,000 units.

Product Portfolio

The core product sequences are all SUVs, covering segments from city compact cars to heavy-duty four-wheel drives. Main models include the Scorpio (global high-clearance hardcore off-roader), XUV700 (full-size high-end luxury SUV, with technology benchmarked against European and American products), Bolero (rural low-cost pickup truck), and Thar (two-door/four-door removable hardtop).
The pure electric lineup expanded in 2025: the BE 6 is positioned for city high performance, the XEV 9e emphasizes native space, and the XEV 9S is India’s first electric seven-seater XEV. Pre-sales were launched following the release of the XEV 9S, which is based on the INGLO skateboard platform. The company plans to launch 10 new fuel SUVs and 6 pure electric SUVs (including Vision.S and Vision.X BEV versions) by 2031.

Market Performance

Total sales from January to December 2025 reached 518,300 units, marking a sharp year-on-year increase. The annual sales target is expected to exceed 620,000 units. Single-month SUV sales in November reached 56,300 units, representing a 22% year-on-year growth. Diesel models occupy a large proportion of sales; 77% of vehicles sold in FY2025 were equipped with diesel engines, while pure electric vehicles accounted for 2.3%. The XUV700 has sold a cumulative total of 304,700 units domestically since its release four years ago. Cumulative EV sales reached 55,000 in 2025. The XEV 9e sold 8,000 units in the first two months, capturing a share of the high-end new track.

Core Technology

The entire fuel engine series is mainly based on the mHawk 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, with some expanded gasoline engines. Electric drive products are fully self-developed: the INGLO pure electric platform is a specifically developed skateboard architecture with the battery pack laid flat on the chassis. INGLO models access the cockpit AI system — MAIA (India's fastest vehicle-grade AI), which supports continuous voice commands, real-time terrain planning, face recognition, and more. The next-generation MESMA hybrid strategy has been realized through a range-extended version (1.2L EREV) on INGLO and a parallel-series hybrid on the fuel platform, with mass production officially starting in 2026. Basic models feature front and rear double wishbone suspension and L2-level assisted driving, which are also equipped on high-end cars. The NU_IQ modular platform will debut in 2027, covering the full series of fuel, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric models, as well as left-hand/right-hand drive global specifications.

Global Presence

In 2026, Mahindra won a 35,000-unit order for the Scorpio pickup truck from the Indonesian government, refreshing its export volume record. Sales in Australia hit new highs for three consecutive years. The company plans to export NU_IQ platform electric vehicles and high-end SUVs to the UK within the next 18 to 24 months. Mahindra has already established 47 factories and 21 global R&D centers worldwide, with business operations covering over 100 countries. It continues to evaluate 2 to 3 new right-hand drive markets for expansion.

Future Outlook

Passenger car monthly production capacity will increase to 820,000 units/month in FY2026 to FY2027 (adding 14,000 units of new platform vehicles), and the Nagpur factory plans to start production in 2028. The group upgraded its "New Desire 2031" plan, setting a pure electric sales target of more than 30%. It plans to build pure electric full-capacity production lines before 2030. To further improve profitability, management is establishing an ultra-fast 800V high-voltage charging system and utilizing fleet data to enhance advanced assisted driving capabilities.
