Proton Saga

2026-10-06 12:20:02

The Proton Saga is an entry-level A-segment four-door sedan by Malaysian national carmaker Proton, and stands as the most iconic model in the history of the Malaysian automotive industry. First launched in 1985, the Saga was Malaysia's first national car, jointly developed by Proton and Japan's Mitsubishi Motors. The name "SAGA" is an acronym formed from Safety, Achievement, Greatness, and Ability, symbolising safety, accomplishment, greatness, and capability. Since its debut in 1985, the Saga has been part of Malaysian lives for 40 years, with cumulative sales surpassing 2 million units, truly cementing its status as Malaysia's "national sedan." The model currently on sale is the fourth-generation Saga (codename MC3) launched in November 2025, underpinned by Proton's in-house developed Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) platform.

Design Language

The fourth-generation Saga receives a comprehensive exterior overhaul. Up front, it sports Proton's latest "Tiger" emblem paired with a redesigned, prominent dot-matrix grille inspired by traditional Malaysian Songket fabric motifs. A chrome strip bridges the LED projector headlamps with L-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs), creating a sharper and more distinctive visual identity. Projector LED headlamps are standard across the range, offering superior illumination over conventional reflector units. Along the sides, sharp character lines run from the front fenders through the door handles to the rear. At the rear, it adopts a trendy full-width LED taillight bar featuring the "PROTON" wordmark in the centre, effectively accentuating its visual width. In terms of dimensions, the sedan measures 4,390 mm in length, 1,690 mm in width, and 1,525 mm in height, with a 2,465 mm wheelbase. Inside, the Saga moves away from the outgoing model's cabin layout, adopting a modern family design language akin to the S70 and X90. Higher-spec variants feature a dual-screen setup comprising a 7-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Powertrain and Performance

Across the entire lineup, the fourth-generation Saga is powered by a Geely-sourced 1.5L i-GT four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine (codename BHE15-CFN). Derived from the same engine family as the 1.5T four-cylinder unit in the facelifted X50, this unit omits the turbocharger and replaces direct injection with conventional fuel injectors. It delivers a maximum output of 120 PS (approx. 88 kW) and 150 Nm of torque, marking a notable increase of 25 PS and 30 Nm over the outgoing 1.3L CamPro engine. Featuring a timing chain design, the engine operates 25% quieter than rival units, delivering a substantial leap in overall refinement. During development, the powerplant underwent more than 50,000 hours of bench testing and 9,000,000 km of global road durability trials. As for the transmission, the range-topping Premium variant is equipped with a CVT, delivering fuel consumption as low as 4.9 L/100 km; the Standard and Executive variants are paired with an Aisin 4-speed automatic transmission (4AT), returning 5.1 L/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

The fourth-generation Saga is built on Proton's proprietary Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) platform, with its core technology and intellectual property wholly owned by Proton to meet international safety, performance, and emissions standards. The chassis employs a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear torsion beam semi-independent suspension setup, specifically reinforced to enhance high-speed stability and cornering agility. For the first time, the Saga upgrades from rear drums to four-wheel disc brakes, significantly boosting braking performance. The steering is upgraded to a new Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, providing a lighter steering feel and sharper precision. Its body structure incorporates the Reinforced Safety Structure (RESS) philosophy, blending Hot Press Formed (HPF) steel, Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS), and High-Strength Steel (HSS) to strike an optimal balance between torsional rigidity and impact energy absorption. The Saga is the first mass-production model in the A-segment to feature an HPF structure.

Cabin and Equipment

Equipment levels in the Saga vary across variants. The flagship Premium variant comes fitted with a 7-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen running the Atlas OS, with support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Physical buttons are retained on the centre console for straightforward, tactile operation. The mid-spec Executive variant receives the 9-inch touchscreen and a reverse camera, while the entry-level Standard variant settles for a conventional 2-DIN Bluetooth head unit alongside a 7-inch digital meter panel. For seat upholstery, the Premium gets leather-wrapped seats, while the Standard and Executive feature fabric. Rear air-conditioning vents and a rear centre armrest are omitted across the entire range. Boot capacity is rated at approximately 420 litres, adequately meeting daily family requirements.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

Safety represents a major upgrade highlight on the fourth-generation Saga. On the passive safety front, 6 airbags (dual front, side, and curtain) are now standard across the entire lineup, representing a massive leap from the previous dual-airbag setup. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) are also standard across all variants.

In terms of active safety, the Executive and Premium variants introduce Level 1 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) for the first time. Working via a front monocular camera in tandem with dual rear radar modules, the suite comprises: Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) , Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) , Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Auto High Beam (AHB), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) , Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Door Opening Warning (DOW) , and Front Departure Alert (FDA). The entry-level Standard variant misses out on the ADAS suite.

Market Performance and Reception

Order books for the fourth-generation Saga officially opened on 10 November 2025, offering three variants: Standard, Executive, and Premium. Official retail prices are RM37,990, RM43,990, and RM48,990 respectively (approx. RMB 64,000 to RMB 83,000, inclusive of an RM1,000 launch rebate). The new model introduces 35 new features, delivering an estimated total upgrade value of over RM12,000.

Market reception was overwhelmingly positive, garnering over 20,000 bookings within the first week of order taking, and surpassing 30,000 bookings within a week post-launch. By the end of 2025, cumulative deliveries exceeded 10,000 units in just over a month, with December alone accounting for 7,975 units. In May 2026, the Saga recorded 2,350 sales [to be updated]. The Saga is not merely a sales cornerstone for Proton, but also a living witness and key player in the 40-year evolution of the Malaysian automotive industry. As an A-segment sedan priced under RM50,000, the Saga continues to cement its legendary "national car" status in the entry-level segment through a thoroughly revamped powertrain, class-above safety features, and a highly competitive pricing strategy.
