Proton (Proton Holdings Berhad) is Malaysia's national automobile manufacturer and a symbol of the country’s automotive industry. Its full official name is Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sendirian Berhad, commonly abbreviated as Proton. Headquartered in Shah Alam, Selangor, Proton was officially established on 7 May 1983 at the initiative of Malaysia’s fourth Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. As the nation's first state-owned automotive company, Proton was founded with a clear mission: to develop Malaysia’s local automotive industry, nurture a domestic supplier ecosystem, and provide affordable, high-quality transportation for Malaysian citizens.
On 9 July 1985, Proton launched its first domestically produced model — the first-generation Proton Saga. The name “Saga” comes from the seeds of the local sea bean plant, symbolising the brand’s aspiration to take root in Malaysia and grow strongly. Based on the Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore platform, the Saga marked Malaysia’s official entry into mass automobile production. In the years that followed, Proton introduced a series of successful models, including the Wira, Waja, Gen-2, Persona, and Exora, and once dominated the domestic market. Prior to the establishment of Perodua in 1993, Proton was Malaysia’s sole national car brand and served as the driving force behind the country’s transition from import substitution to independent automotive manufacturing.
The year 2017 marked a major turning point for Proton. China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group acquired a 49.9% strategic stake, becoming its exclusive foreign partner. Through Geely’s injection of advanced technology platforms, supply chain integration, and global management expertise, Proton achieved significant improvements in product quality, sales performance, and R&D capabilities. Under Geely’s empowerment, Proton successfully transformed from a regionally focused automaker reliant on Mitsubishi technology into a modern, forward-looking manufacturer with independent development capabilities, firmly rooted in ASEAN and expanding globally. By 2025, Proton had further consolidated its position as Malaysia’s second-largest automobile manufacturer, completing a comprehensive transition from a traditional fuel vehicle brand to a dual-line strategy encompassing both fuel and new energy vehicles.
Proton’s development history can be divided into four key stages based on changes in its core technological partnerships.
Stage 1: Mitsubishi Technology Foundation Period (1983–1996)
Following its establishment, Proton partnered with Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors as its primary technology provider. The launch of the first-generation Proton Saga in 1985 was not only a historic milestone for Malaysia’s automotive industry but also marked the beginning of its technical collaboration with Mitsubishi. Over the next decade, Proton relied primarily on Mitsubishi platforms, successively introducing models such as the Wira (1993), Satria, and Perdana. This period enabled the brand to rapidly build a comprehensive local product lineup spanning A-, B-, and C-segment vehicles. Proton successfully completed the transition from having no automotive industry to establishing one, laying a solid foundation for Malaysia’s domestic supplier ecosystem and automotive engineering talent pool.
Stage 2: Turn-of-the-Century Slump and Transformation (1997–2016)
The Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 triggered a sharp contraction in Malaysia’s domestic car demand, severely affecting Proton’s profitability and competitiveness. From 2004 to 2016, the company faced prolonged challenges, including consecutive financial losses, slow product updates, ageing model lineups, declining quality perception, and intensifying market competition. Mitsubishi gradually reduced its technical support after the early 2000s, while newer competitors further eroded Proton’s brand strength. Although Proton introduced models such as the Persona and Exora during this period and made significant investments in a new manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak, the results were limited. Its market share fell from absolute dominance in the 1990s to around 10%. The brand frequently faced financial difficulties and actively sought foreign strategic investment for restructuring.
Stage 3: Geely Strategic Revival Period (2017–2024)
In June 2017, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group acquired a 49.9% stake in Proton, becoming its strategic foreign partner. This partnership brought advanced technology, capital, and global expertise to the brand. Proton quickly reorganised its product portfolio through a strategy of “introduction, absorption, and re-innovation.” In 2018, the Proton X70 — the first model built on the Geely Boyue platform — was launched. With its strong design, advanced intelligent driving features, and significantly improved overall quality, the X70 became an instant bestseller in the Malaysian SUV market. It was followed by the X50 and X90, allowing Proton to rapidly cover key market segments and achieve a strong sales recovery. By around 2022, Proton had risen to become Malaysia’s second-best-selling automobile brand, behind only Perodua, with annual sales exceeding 150,000 units.
Stage 4: Electrification and Platform Independence (2025–Present)
The year 2025 represented the most significant strategic turning point in Proton’s history. The brand officially entered the new energy vehicle segment with the launch of its dedicated electric sub-brand, e.MAS. Its first electric model, the e.MAS 7, quickly captured the title of Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle. In September 2025, Proton’s new electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim commenced operations, becoming Malaysia’s first dedicated EV production facility. In November 2025, Proton unveiled its self-developed Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) platform, with the all-new Saga as its first model. In 2026, Proton has set an ambitious global sales target of 200,000 units and plans to introduce more electric and hybrid models based on the new AMA platform.
Proton’s current product lineup is built on three main pillars: the Fuel SUV Family, the e.MAS Electric Vehicle Family, and the AMA Platform Entry-level Models. Together, they cover a comprehensive range from compact sedans to B-, C-, and D-segment SUVs, as well as pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
X-Series Fuel SUV Family
The X-Series represents Proton’s sales backbone. Built on Geely platforms, these models offer clear market positioning and mature technology.
Proton X50: A B-segment compact SUV that received a mid-cycle update in Q3 2025. Equipped with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged i-GT engine, it marks Proton’s shift from three-cylinder to four-cylinder powertrains. In 2025, it sold 28,057 units — a year-on-year increase of 18.6% — and secured the title of Malaysia’s best-selling B-segment SUV for five consecutive years.
Proton X70: A C-segment SUV and the first model born from the Geely partnership, launched in 2018. It received its third update in 2025, adopting a new 1.5-litre i-GT four-cylinder engine for better fuel efficiency and refinement. Since its debut, cumulative registrations have surpassed 112,000 units, making it one of the longest-running successful models in its segment.
Proton X90: A D-segment seven-seater large SUV. In 2025, it led its segment for three consecutive years and was Malaysia’s best-selling seven-seater SUV. It held the top position in the D-segment for 10 consecutive months throughout the year.
Fuel Sedan Series
These models form the foundation of Proton’s entry-level and family sedan market.
Proton Saga: The brand’s most iconic entry-level four-door sedan. The all-new generation, built on Proton’s self-developed AMA platform, was launched in November 2025. It recorded full-year sales of 74,013 units in 2025 — the highest annual volume since 2011 — and served as Proton’s primary sales driver.
Proton S70: A C-segment sedan that ranked among the top models in its segment for 15 consecutive months in 2025. It received a new four-cylinder engine in December and represents the mid-to-high-end offering in Proton’s sedan lineup, known for its spaciousness and advanced technology integration.
Proton Persona and Proton Iriz: Compact sedan and hatchback models based on the older PIES architecture. Now in the end-of-life stage, they will gradually be replaced by new models built on the AMA platform.
e.MAS Electric Vehicle Family
e.MAS is Proton’s dedicated new energy vehicle sub-brand, with the name standing for “Electric Mobility Adaptive Solutions”.
AMA Platform Family Vehicle Series (Planned)
2025 proved to be Proton’s most resilient year since the strategic partnership with Geely began in 2017. According to official data, Proton Group (including domestic sales and exports) achieved cumulative annual sales of 157,976 units, representing a counter-cyclical growth of 3.3% year-on-year.
While total industry sales in Malaysia declined slightly from approximately 815,000 units in 2024 to 814,949 units (a 0.2% decrease), Proton successfully increased its market share to 19.4%, up 0.7 percentage points from the previous year. In December, the brand recorded its strongest monthly performance of the year with 14,655 units sold. In terms of absolute volume, Proton maintained its position as Malaysia’s second-largest automobile brand, behind only Perodua, while outperforming major international players such as Toyota and Honda.
Model Contributions Proton’s sales remained highly concentrated among key models. The Saga alone contributed 74,013 units, accounting for 46.8% of total sales and serving as the brand’s reliable “cash cow.” The X50 followed as the second pillar with 28,057 units sold (17.8% of total sales). The S70 and X90 also performed strongly as segment leaders in their respective categories. Meanwhile, the e.MAS 7 emerged as Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle in 2025, with over 7,000 units delivered.
Export Performance Proton’s export business continued to grow steadily. In 2025, the company exported 6,000 units, a 26% increase year-on-year — marking the highest export volume since 2012. Key overseas markets included Egypt, Vietnam, Singapore, and Mauritius, with the X50, Saga, and e.MAS 7 being the main models shipped to multiple countries and regions.
Monthly sales showed a consistent upward trend throughout the year. By the end of the third quarter, Proton had sold 114,297 units. In September, monthly sales reached 13,395 units, with market share expected to hit 23.4%. The mid-cycle facelift of the X50 launched in August helped stabilise monthly sales above the 10,000-unit mark. Notably, in May 2025, Proton achieved 6.1% year-on-year growth, marking the third consecutive month of positive growth and successfully defending its market share targets.
Financial Position Proton has not yet released complete audited annual profit figures. However, based on executive statements and the company’s steady sales growth combined with export performance, the brand has moved into a healthy breakeven zone, supported by government subsidies and controlled R&D expenditure.
Proton’s R&D and technology development have evolved through three distinct phases: reliance on Mitsubishi technology, technology sharing with Geely, and finally, independent platform development. By the end of 2025, Proton had established a clear technical roadmap based on three major platforms: the X-Series platform for fuel SUVs, the e.MAS electric vehicle platform (shared with Geely’s GMA architecture), and its own proprietary Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) platform.
Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA): A Leap in Independent Intellectual Property
The AMA is a fully modular platform with complete intellectual property rights owned by Proton. Developed primarily by Proton with technical support from Geely, it represents a significant milestone in the brand’s technological independence.
The first mass-production model on the AMA platform is the all-new Proton Saga (internal code: AMA01), launched in November 2025. The platform will expand further in 2026 with models such as the AMA02, AMA05, and AMA06. Key advantages of the AMA platform include the ability to extend the wheelbase by up to 290mm and widen the track by 43mm. It also supports simultaneous development of left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive variants, making it highly suitable for global markets. Additionally, its advanced electrical and electronic architecture integrates sophisticated driver assistance systems and comprehensive connectivity features.
Powertrain: Transition to Four-Cylinder i-GT Engines
Since the second half of 2025, Proton has been implementing a powertrain unification strategy for its fuel vehicles. The company has fully transitioned from the previous three-cylinder GEP3 TGDi engine to the new, more refined 1.5-litre turbocharged i-GT four-cylinder engine (BHE15TD).
The updated Proton X50 was the first to receive this new engine, followed by the X70 MC3, X90 MC, and S70 MC models. This shift significantly improves fuel efficiency, refinement, and driving smoothness.
New Energy Powertrain: Pure Electric and Hybrid in Parallel
The e.MAS 7 is built on Geely’s GMA platform and benefits from shared resources within the Geely Group, including battery laboratories, powertrain testing facilities, and intelligent vehicle R&D centres. The e.MAS 7 plug-in hybrid version was launched in February 2026, offering drivers the flexibility of short-distance pure electric driving combined with long-range fuel-electric synergy.
Intelligent Systems and ADAS Integration with Local Supply Chain
In the second half of 2025, Proton signed multiple joint development agreements with leading Chinese Tier-1 suppliers to localise the production of advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) hardware and software in Malaysia. The brand also partnered with local component supplier Delloyd Technology to co-develop ADAS solutions. This marks the first time advanced driving assistance features have been integrated into Proton’s entry-level domestic models.
Chassis and Dynamic Handling
New-generation models on the AMA platform continue Proton’s tradition of strong handling characteristics. Chassis tuning, steering response, and dynamic stability have all been meticulously calibrated to suit Malaysian road conditions and the preferences of drivers in the broader ASEAN region.
Proton’s overseas strategy has focused on the ASEAN market since the brand’s inception. Following Geely’s strategic investment in 2017, Proton evolved from a model reliant on sporadic exports to a more structured approach — “ASEAN-based, global rebadging.” The brand has since become one of Geely’s key R&D and manufacturing hubs for right-hand-drive vehicles and entry-level models.
Systematic Export Growth
In 2025, Proton established Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd to systematically expand its overseas operations. The company achieved a significant milestone by exporting 6,000 units — the highest annual export volume since 2012 — representing a 26% year-on-year increase.
Key overseas markets in 2025 included:
Geely Collaboration and Platform Synergy
A series of models developed on Proton’s AMA platform will be rebadged and sold by Geely in selected overseas markets. These efforts target more than 50 countries across ASEAN, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The AMA platform was designed from the outset with both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive variants, meeting stringent standards such as ASEAN NCAP 5-star safety ratings and EU crash regulations.
Tanjung Malim New Energy Vehicle Export Hub
The new electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim, which began operations in September 2025, has an annual production capacity of up to 45,000 units. In its first year, the facility plans to export complete e.MAS series vehicles as well as knocked-down (CKD) kits to key right-hand-drive markets, including Vietnam, Singapore, and the Philippines.
The Tanjung Malim Automotive High-Tech Valley is set to become a strategic hub that significantly enhances Proton’s capability to export right-hand-drive vehicles and new energy products across the region.
Facing 2026 and the longer-term future, Proton has laid out clear strategies across sales targets, new product launches, electrification penetration, and platform globalisation.
Sales Target: Aiming for 200,000 Global Units
In January 2026, Proton announced an ambitious global sales target of 200,000 units — a 27% increase compared to 2025. Proton CEO Li Chunchong has tasked the Saga with challenging for Malaysia’s single-model sales championship, while positioning the e.MAS sub-brand to become Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle brand in 2026.
Dense New Product Launch Schedule
Proton will maintain a strong product cadence throughout 2026. Updated models including the X70 MC3, X90 MC, and S70 MC will be rolled out in stages. The AMA02 is scheduled to enter production in Q4 2026 as a compact A-segment crossover SUV (internally referred to as Saga Cross), with hybrid variants also under consideration. The AMA05 and AMA06 models are planned for launch between 2027 and 2028.
Multi-pronged Electrification Strategy
Proton is advancing electrification on multiple fronts. The e.MAS 7 PHEV was launched in Malaysia in February 2026. Hybrid powertrains for the AMA platform are already in development, integrating a dedicated hybrid transmission with the efficient 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. In its 2035 technology roadmap, Proton is pursuing four parallel powertrain pathways: internal combustion engine, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric.
Platform Internationalisation and Brand Evolution
The AMA platform is Proton’s self-developed technology with full intellectual property rights. It is expected to establish Malaysia as a core hub for Southeast Asian automotive engineering and right-hand-drive vehicle development.
Through close collaboration with Geely, Proton is promoting a “Malaysia R&D, Global Shared Parts and Platform Rebadging” strategy. This approach aims to create a highly integrated and flexible automotive industry chain across the ASEAN region. From the Tanjung Malim factory to global markets, Proton is steadily transforming from a national icon into a transnational mainstream automaker. The brand’s globalisation journey is entering a new and exciting chapter in 2026.
