XPeng MONA's Hit Formula: Will It Still Work with an SUV Shell?

Before the MONA M03, few new EV startups would label 100,000-level family sedans with tags like "Intelligent Driving" and "Technology".

But XPeng dares to, and it was hugely successful.

Now, XPeng has applied the same formula to an SUV shell — MONA L03 officially debuted.

Besides pure electric, it also adds an extended-range version for the first time. The pricing will likely fall in the 150,000-level sales bracket, which we reported in detail earlier.

Can L03 replicate the M03's hit myth? The editorial team split into pro and con sides, launching an intense debate.

Pro Side

Intelligent Driving Group — Wang Jie

Among electric cars in the 100,000-150,000 range, currently L03's biggest rivals are BYD, Leapmotor, and Geely.

In terms of looks, XPeng MONA's youth tag is firmly established. The M03 facelift introduced new spring/summer colors like Avocado, which received good market feedback.

From some leak info, L03 also has very rich Dopamine colors available, plus the iconic T-shaped headlights, etc. The whole car is quite personalized.

For young people: Controversy is okay, but mediocrity is not allowed.

In terms of intelligence, XPeng MONA comes standard with city-assisted driving. Combined with campus memory functions, it can go spot-to-spot. At this price point, it's hard to find a second home.

Geely's SUVs in this price segment mainly feature highway pilot; BYD's SUVs at the same price point cost 12,000 extra to option for city pilot; Leapmotor has spot-to-spot functions, but city pilot is still developing, and available regions are expanding.

Young people generally accept intelligent functions more. If there's a hard requirement for city pilot, XPeng MONA L03 is already holding the winning hand.

Regarding space, domestic cars are doing quite well now. The rest mainly depends on everyone's preference for various brands.

Xiaohongshu Operations — Chen Yuzhu

There doesn't seem to be any reason not to sell well.

L03 just debuted, and on Xiaohongshu there are already quite a few discussion posts. Most people think this car will have higher buzz than the GX, and the design looks better than Leapmotor at the same price point.

Of course, most is just urging the launch.

This is XPeng's "asymmetric competition" ace card. 150,000-level pricing. Essentially, this car uses XPeng's 200,000-level product standards to fight 150,000 competitors.

Young users value appearance and intelligence more than most people imagine. XPeng has clear advantages in these two points.

Powertrain Group — Shi Jinming

Currently, MONA M03 is already XPeng's absolute sales pillar. Monthly deliveries consistently break 10,000, accounting for a very high proportion within the brand.

Demo consumers prefer SUVs over sedans much more. Given M03 has built a solid foundation, launching an SUV model L03 on the same platform smoothly amplifies the audience, with a very broad prospect.

In terms of pricing, referencing MONA M03 (starting from 119,800) and G6 (starting from 176,900) positioning, L03 will likely precisely fit the 150,000 to 200,000 sales bracket.

More importantly, M03's hot sales have allowed XPeng to fully understand the real needs of this level of user. Car manufacturing experience is sufficient.

For example, energy consumption. We previously compared M03 and Tesla Model 3 directly on the high-speed ring. The powertrain efficiency even had a slight advantage. This shows XPeng's foundation is very solid — cheap price, but performance not compromised.

L03 on the same platform can almost certainly inherit this advantage. Range and energy consumption performance will likely still be in the first tier of the same class.

So overall, L03 is like putting an SUV shell that Chinese people are more willing to buy on MONA M03's success formula, locking the price in the interval where sales are highest. I am optimistic about it becoming XPeng's next sales ace.

Powertrain Group — Zhang Xianglong

L03 has two versions: pure electric and extended range. Pure electric version 56/69 kWh battery, 550-650km range, consistent with M03's strategy.

But the extended-range version has 1.5L range extender + 183kW motor, WLTC pure electric range max 257km. Enough to charge once a week for daily commute.

Previously M03 only had pure electric, which would keep many users who only have one car at home and occasionally need long-distance travel outside the door. But L03's extended-range version incorporates this part of users into the range.

Moreover, in the sub-segment L03 is located in, extended-range/hybrid will be the market's main selling models.

Because for many third and fourth-tier cities, for users who only have one car at home, extended range is a hard requirement to some extent. This way they can experience new energy intelligence without range anxiety. Family's first car is more considering SUV.

But in the 150,000-level extended-range SUV sub-segment, there is no absolute king yet. Compared with competitors like BYD Song PLUS DM-i, Leapmotor C10 and C11, Deepal S07, XPeng's intelligent driving is an absolute advantage.

If L03 extended-range version pricing is around 150,000, for users who don't have such determination to choose pure electric, MONA series reputation plus XPeng's intelligent driving, L03 is likely to become the first choice for extended-range SUVs at this price point.

Overseas Operations — Liu Xiao

From a global perspective, M03 has already opened the global market for XPeng. Middle East, Africa, Germany, Thailand, etc. all have M03 presence.

On overseas platforms, many people want to understand this Chinese "Model 3".

And XPeng's overseas plan is also very mature. He Xiaopeng also stated that this year more and more cars will be sent overseas.

And borrowing the overseas user reputation and market heat accumulated by M03, L03 does not need to start from zero. Can quickly copy the hit path. Some overseas users even think MONA L03 is better than Porsche, Polestar.

Con Side

Intelligent Driving Group — Zhang Tinghao

MONA L03 might sell well, but I don't think after entering the steady sales period, it can become a hit like M03.

Sedans and SUVs have very different expectations given by people. Sedans need to be pretty and easy to drive. SUVs naturally bind more with practicality.

L03 itself dimensions are less than 4.7m. Also adopts a large sloping roof shape. This limits L03's seating and loading space. Might filter out some family users who need larger space.

Additionally, referencing MONA's brand positioning, L03's price likely falls in the 150,000 range. For SUVs at this price point, BYD, Leapmotor, Geely Galaxy, Deepal, etc. brand series many models are volume and full, L03 does not occupy volume advantage.

L03 did not take the proven hit route. In the current competitive situation, L03 wants to take a sharp path to win a unique achievement, challenge difficulty is a bit high.

Cockpit Group — Yuan Mingqing

From a personal perspective, XPeng MONA L03 in the 150,000 market core advantages focus on intelligence and appearance.

For young users with only commuting/shuttling needs, although BYD, Geely, Chery etc. competitors are relatively conservative in design language, lack appeal, but L03's coupe styling and tech sense also seem to be lacking.

The direct cost brought by coupe styling is the compression of rear headroom.

For users with family travel needs, this point may become an important decision barrier. L03's product positioning naturally leans towards young singles or couples, rather than multi-person families. This itself limits its audience width.

The most critical factor should be price-performance ratio.

M03 becoming a hit, core lies in cross-level configuration and people-friendly price.

If L03 cannot continue this strategy in pricing, it should be hard to move consumers in the 150,000 market who are highly price-sensitive. After all, BYDs space, range, and brand perception are no less, and price is more aggressive.

Overall, I think L03 has certain product highlights, but replicating M03's hit myth is not easy.

New Car Team — Xu Yunwei

L03's biggest problem lies in whether it can bring out things that "others don't have but I do" in the same class market.

In design, it continues M03's family language verified by the market. But comparatively, L03's rear end layering is stronger.

At the same time providing color-match brake calipers, little duck tail spoiler, and various wheel styles optional. Overall looks more sporty.

In terms of power, L03 will likely abandon the front-mounted motor layout on M03, adjusting the drive motor to the rear axle.

For pure electric versions, there is even a chance to unlock a front trunk.

If simply "lifting up and enlarging" M03, then L03 at most is just an SUV version M03. Solves more space level issues, especially rear headroom improvement.

When MONA M03 launched in 2024, facing 100,000 pure electric sedan market still a blue ocean;

And today's 100,000 SUV market, long ago rolled into a red ocean. Space increasing is certainly important, but relying on space alone obviously insufficient to form differentiated competitiveness.

Therefore for L03, extended range system, space utilization, AI on-board perhaps are truly places worth paying attention to.
