In an era dominated by SUVs, if you still crave the low-slung stance and compact proportions of a proper hot hatch, the Leapmotor Lafa 5 (set to be known as the B05 in overseas markets) is sure to turn heads at the 2026 Auto China in Beijing.
Unlike the sea of crossovers and bulky electric sedans flooding the market, the Lafa 5 stays true to a pure European five-door hatchback philosophy. Its sharp front-end design echoes the spirit of the Volkswagen Scirocco, while its sleek side profile has led many media outlets to call it the "Electric Volkswagen Golf".

Built on Leapmotor's latest LEAP 3.5 architecture, the Lafa 5 delivers impressive interior space despite its compact footprint. Its wheelbase even rivals many C-segment vehicles.
Dimensions: 4,490 mm (L) × 1,880 mm (W) × 1,520 mm (H), with a 2,735 mm wheelbase. It is significantly larger than the Golf Mk8 (4,284 mm), with much better space utilization.
Cargo Capacity: 435 litres with seats up, expanding to 1,400 litres when the rear seats are folded.

Aimed squarely at younger buyers, the Lafa 5 adopts a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout with near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution. It features independent multi-link rear suspension and 19-inch wheels, promising engaging dynamics.

Based on CLTC figures, the WLTP range for the B05 is expected to fall between 420 km and 500 km. DC fast charging can bring the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 18 minutes.

The cabin adopts Leapmotor's B-series design language, featuring an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch central touchscreen. Lower variants come with the Snapdragon 8155 chip, while higher-spec models upgrade to the more powerful 8295 or 8650 chip, with optional LiDAR available.
Thoughtful details include unique expansion ports on the passenger-side dashboard for accessories such as foldable tables or phone holders. The show car even features a "Tapau Hook" for hanging takeaway bags — a nice touch for everyday usability.
Despite its minimalist aesthetic, the interior feels premium thanks to Alcantara-like materials, an all-black theme, and frameless doors that enhance the sporty atmosphere.

In China, the Lafa 5 is priced between RMB 97,800 and RMB 121,800 (approximately RM56,000 to RM70,000). With confirmed exports already planned for the UK and Australia, right-hand-drive (RHD) production is underway.
However, Leapmotor's current ASEAN strategy appears focused on SUVs, such as the upcoming B03X and A10. While there is no official launch timeline for Malaysia yet, the B05 would undoubtedly be a breath of fresh air for local buyers seeking a fun and practical alternative to the BYD Dolphin or MG4.
