400 km in just 5 minutes - BYD Flash Charging inches one step closer to Malaysia, MoU signed with Gentari

BYD Flash Charging inches one more step closer to Malaysia, following a memorandum of understanding signed between Gentari and BYD Malaysia to explore deploying the technology locally.

The system is claimed to add approximately 400 km of driving range in as little as five minutes, provided the vehicle is compatible and conditions are optimal.

Signed in Shenzhen on 21 October 2026, the agreement covers high-power charging infrastructure and supporting battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Intercity routes among potential charging locations

Gentari and BYD Malaysia will identify suitable sites, including intercity corridors connecting major population centres.

That would put the technology where shorter charging stops could make a meaningful difference for drivers travelling between cities. However, identifying a location is only part of the work.

Both companies will also assess power infrastructure, battery storage requirements, technical feasibility and commercial arrangements. Project development and operating models are included in the scope, laying the groundwork for a potential wider rollout.

Gentari group chief executive officer Sushil Purohit said Malaysia’s next phase of EV adoption will depend on the quality, convenience and reliability of charging.

“Speed is one part of that equation. Drivers also need chargers in the right places, backed by reliable power and dependable operations,” he said.

He added that BYD’s expertise in EVs, batteries and high-power charging complements Gentari’s experience in developing and operating charging networks.

Malaysia records 53,537 EV registrations in nine months

The agreement comes as Malaysia recorded 53,537 new EV registrations in the first nine months of 2026, up 98.8% compared with the same period last year.

The companies said this growth supports Malaysia’s wider electrification ambitions, including the government’s target of 30,000 public EV charging points nationwide by 2030.

Gentari, a wholly owned subsidiary of Petronas, currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia. Its Gentari Go Roaming Hub provides access to approximately 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and India.

BYD expands Flash Charging beyond China

BYD vice president and Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division general manager Liu Xueliang said the company is taking its advanced charging technology beyond its home market as it expands internationally.

“Malaysia is an important market for BYD, and we are pleased to bring BYD Flash Charging here as part of our continued efforts to support the country’s growing EV adoption,” he said.

Through the Gentari collaboration, BYD will explore how the technology can deliver a faster and more connected charging experience for Malaysian drivers.

BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma said the partnership forms part of the company’s efforts to give customers greater confidence in switching to EVs, with charging infrastructure supporting the broader ownership experience.

Partnership also covers renewable energy and storage

The collaboration extends beyond mobility. Both companies will explore renewable energy generation and energy storage opportunities, drawing on Gentari’s clean energy expertise and BYD’s storage technology.
