BMW iX1 eDrive20L M Sport Buyer's Guide: Adding 81 mm of rear legroom for a modest RM2,000 premium

BMW Malaysia announced the pricing for the iX1 eDrive20L M Sport in April 2026 at RM252,800. The standard iX1 eDrive20 M Sport is priced at RM250,800, representing a price difference of just RM2,000.

The wheelbase is stretched by 110 mm, overall length increases by 116 mm, and rear legroom gains an extra 81 mm. All this comes at a premium of just RM2,000. This is the best-value wheelbase stretch in the Malaysian market this year.

Powertrain

Both cars feature the exact same electric powertrain: a front-mounted motor producing 204 hp and 250 Nm, paired with a 66.5 kWh NMC battery pack, achieving 0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h.

Charging specifications are also identical, with DC fast charging peaking at 130 kW (taking 32 minutes from 10% to 80%) and 11 kW AC charging, which requires approximately 6 hours and 45 minutes for a full charge.

The difference lies in the driving range. The standard version delivers a WLTP-rated range of 475 km, while the long-wheelbase version offers 433 km, which is 42 km less.

This comes down to a longer, heavier body and altered aerodynamics. A 42 km deficit is barely noticeable during daily city driving, but it is certainly worth considering if you frequently travel outstation.

Extra Rear Cabin Space

The wheelbase has been extended from 2,692 mm in the standard version to 2,802 mm, an increase of 110 mm. Overall vehicle length has grown from 4,500 mm to 4,616 mm, up by 116 mm.

For rear passengers, this translates directly into an extra 81 mm of legroom and 107 mm of knee room. A 107 mm gain is roughly the width of an adult's palm.

On top of that, the rear seat squab has been lengthened by 15 mm, with softer foam padding. While the standard iX1's rear cabin is adequate for adults, it is not exceptionally roomy; the long-wheelbase version, however, allows passengers to sit in genuine comfort for hours on end.

Equipment

The long-wheelbase version comes standard with a panoramic sunroof featuring an electric sunshade. The standard version lacks this feature. In Malaysia's tropical climate, an electric sunshade is arguably far more practical than the sunroof itself.

Aside from this, both cars share an identical kit list: the BMW Curved Display housing a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen running BMW Operating System 9, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the M Sport package which adds 19-inch M light alloy wheels and Shadowline high-gloss exterior trim.

In terms of safety kit, both cars come standard with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), backed by an airbag suite comprising dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags.

Differences in Import Origin

The standard model is fully imported (CBU) from BMW's Regensburg plant in Germany, whereas the long-wheelbase variant is imported CBU from China.

Sourcing the long-wheelbase model from China gives it an advantage under the prevailing import tax structure, which is why the retail premium is kept to a modest RM2,000. Had the long-wheelbase version been brought in from Germany, the price gap would likely have been several times higher.

Warranty and Aftersales Policy

Standard coverage includes a 2-year unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty and an 8-year or 160,000 km high-voltage battery warranty.

Opting for the BMW Service & Repair Inclusive (BSRI) package extends vehicle warranty coverage to 5 years unlimited mileage and includes scheduled servicing for 5 years or 100,000 km, bringing the total price to RM268,600.

For fully electric BEV models, the service coverage extends to 6 years with unlimited mileage.

Verdict

Go for the long-wheelbase version if:

You regularly carry rear passengers. Whether doing the school run, ferrying elderly parents, or occasionally chauffeuring clients, the comfort upgrade provided by the extra 81 mm of legroom and 107 mm of knee room is something the standard car cannot match.

The panoramic sunroof and electric sunshade are also everyday feel-good amenities. With a price difference of just RM2,000, it is an absolute no-brainer.

Go for the standard version if:

Your rear seats are rarely used, and most journeys involve just you and the front passenger. Its 475 km WLTP range offers a 42 km advantage over the long-wheelbase model's 433 km, which is a tangible benefit for frequent long-distance travellers.

The shorter footprint also makes U-turns and manoeuvring in tight multi-storey car parks noticeably easier.

Ultimately, the deciding factor is not about which variant is better, but whether there will actually be people sitting in the back.

If the rear seats will see regular use, the long-wheelbase version is the obvious choice. If the back row remains empty most of the year, the standard model's extra 42 km of range and more compact dimensions make it the more sensible everyday EV.
