GWM Ora 5 HEV video review – 463 Nm hybrid SUV driven ahead of Malaysian launch

The GWM Ora 5 HEV is heading to Malaysia, but what can buyers expect from this hybrid SUV? Ahead of its local launch, Sanjay headed to Thailand for a two-day drive covering Bangkok traffic, highway cruising and winding roads, with a few acceleration and handling exercises thrown into the mix.

First, a quick recap. The Ora 5 HEV pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a hybrid system and a two-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. With 463 Nm sent to the front wheels, the claimed century sprint takes 7.7 seconds. There is certainly no shortage of punch, although putting all that torque down from a standstill proved rather entertaining.

On the road, comfort and powertrain refinement made a positive impression. That said, there are a few small niggles, particularly with the driving position and the decision to put several everyday controls inside the touchscreen. Sanjay also takes a closer look at rear-seat space and how well the assistance systems cope with Bangkok’s busy streets.
