Proton S70 buyer's guide: Choosing between the six variants with Lite and Prime added

On 7 September 2026, Proton announced the addition of two entry-level variants, Lite and Prime, to the S70 lineup. Together with the existing four turbocharged variants—Executive, Premium, Flagship, and Flagship X, the S70 range now offers a total of six variants on sale.

The Lite and Prime serve as entry-level models powered by a naturally aspirated engine, with estimated prices under RM60,000; the Executive and higher variants continue with the turbocharged powertrain.

Prices for Lite and Prime are estimated ranges, with official pricing to be revealed at launch. Prices for Executive and above include Proton's limited-time RM5,000 rebate, offered as an early-bird promotion for the first 2,000 customers registered before 31 March 2026.

Two powertrains: NA vs turbo

The newly introduced Lite and Prime are powered by a 1.5-litre i-GT four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT.

Sharing its powertrain with the Proton Saga, it puts out 120 PS and 150 Nm of torque. However, instead of the Punch CVT in the Saga, it uses a torque-converter CVT derived from the Geely Emgrand, capable of simulating eight virtual ratios.

The existing Executive and higher variants continue with the 1.5-litre i-GT four-cylinder turbo engine pushing out 181 PS and 290 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (7DCT), completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.5 seconds.

The two powertrains deliver distinctly different driving characters.

The naturally aspirated versions lean towards smoothness and fuel efficiency, making them ideal for urban commuting and daily runabouts. In contrast, the turbo models pack substantially more punch, offering effortless highway overtaking and hill climbs under full load.

According to Proton, the new NA variants cater to buyers prioritising affordability, cabin space, and low running costs over outright performance.

Variant hierarchy

Lite: The Entry-Level Choice

The Lite serves as the brand-new entry point for the S70 range, with an estimated price between RM55,000 and RM59,000.

It comes equipped with 16-inch wheels, fabric seats, and an 8-inch infotainment screen. Safety is well-covered with 6 airbags, front and rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera as standard.

For ADAS, it features a rear radar system comprising Blind Spot Information, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Door Opening Warning, and Rear Collision Warning.

It also packs wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an Electronic Parking Brake with Auto Hold, and Remote Engine Start.

Prime: One Step Up

Sitting above the Lite, the Prime is estimated to be priced between RM65,000 and RM69,000. Building upon the Lite, it upgrades to 17-inch wheels and replaces fabric seats with leatherette upholstery. The rest of the core equipment remains identical to the Lite.

Executive: Entry to Turbo Power (After Rebate)

The Executive serves as the entry point to the turbo range, priced at RM68,800 after the limited-time RM5,000 rebate.

Powered by the 1.5T engine and 7DCT, it features 16-inch wheels and an 8-inch touchscreen. Safety and comfort features are further stepped up over the Prime. Note: Standard retail price before rebate is RM73,800.

Premium: Turbo Comfort Upgrade (After Rebate)

The Premium is priced at RM74,800 (post-rebate; original price RM79,800). It brings further enhancements in comfort and convenience over the Executive.

Flagship: Fully Loaded Spec (After Rebate)

The Flagship is priced at RM84,800 (post-rebate; original price RM89,800). Compared to the Premium, it gains 17-inch dual-tone alloys, a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, and auto wipers. The ADAS suite is also more comprehensive.

Flagship X: The Range-Topper (After Rebate)

The Flagship X is the top-spec variant of the S70 lineup, priced at RM89,800 (post-rebate; original price RM94,800). On top of the Flagship, it adds a dedicated aerokit comprising a front splitter, side skirts, and a rear diffuser.

Verdict

On a budget below RM60,000: Pick the Lite.

The Lite lowers the entry barrier for the S70 to under RM60,000. Securing a C-segment-sized sedan at this price bracket offers cabin room and safety equipment that far outclass similarly priced B-segment contenders. While performance is not outright punchy, it is more than adequate for daily urban commutes.

Have a few thousand Ringgit more to spare: Go for the Prime.

The enhanced cabin ambience and sharper looks from the 17-inch wheels and leatherette seats easily justify the price step.

Budget around RM70,000 and want turbo power: Choose the Executive (RM68,800 after rebate).

The 181 PS and 290 Nm output makes everyday driving noticeably more effortless, while the 7.5-second sprint inspires complete confidence when overtaking on highways.

Healthy budget and want the complete kit: Go for Flagship or Flagship X.

With the 12.3-inch central display, full digital cluster, and complete ADAS suite, the extra outlay delivers substantial and tangible equipment upgrades.

By introducing the Lite and Prime, Proton has successfully expanded the S70 lineup from purely "turbo performance-oriented" to include "naturally aspirated value-focused" offerings. Buyers can now easily pinpoint the ideal variant among the six options to match their budget and everyday motoring needs.
