Geely Binrui

2026-10-03 10:00:21

The Geely Binrui is a compact sports sedan by Geely Auto, first launched in August 2018 as the inaugural sedan model built on Geely's BMA (B-segment Modular Architecture) platform. Positioned with a youthful and sporty appeal, it targets young buyers on a budget of RM80,000 to RM100,000 seeking performance and dynamic styling. Variants on sale include the Binrui COOL series, Champion Edition, and Longteng Edition; as of 2025, the entire range is powered by a 1.5T turbocharged engine paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Key segment rivals include sporty family sedans such as the Changan Eado PLUS 1.4T and Chery Arrizo 5 GT 1.6T.

Model Overview

The Geely Binrui is positioned as a compact three-box sedan (C-segment / A-class), representing Geely Auto's strategic offering in the family sedan segment following the Borui and Emgrand. Key highlights include a brisk 0–100 km/h sprint in 7.1 seconds, Level 2 intelligent driver assistance, and sporty styling inside and out. The official retail price range is RM79,800 to RM110,800. As of 2025, variants on sale mainly comprise the 2024 Binrui COOL Champion Edition (RM89,800), Longteng Edition (RM94,800), alongside the 2022 Fengchi Edition (RM94,800), Dianche Edition (RM99,800), and Leiting Edition (RM109,800), with the entire lineup backed by a 4-year or 100,000-km manufacturer warranty.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the Binrui has transitioned from the original "Time Racing Aesthetics" to the Binrui COOL's "Racing Storm" design language. The front fascia features Geely’s signature "Expanding Cosmos" grille, whilst the Binrui COOL variants sport an aggressive blacked-out large-mouth grille flanked by Energy Light Pillar LED headlamps (housing 36 LED units), exuding an athletic stance. Down the sides, a sleek fastback roofline is complemented by sharp dual waistlines and 17-inch dual five-spoke alloy wheels, creating a forward-leaning posture. At the rear, dual chrome exhaust finishers (functional twin exhausts on sports editions) and a full-width chrome strip connecting the tail lamp clusters visually widen the car.

In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,710 mm in length, 1,795 mm in width, and 1,455 mm in height, with a 2,670 mm wheelbase and a 480-litre boot capacity. Exterior colour options include Flame Red, Racing Grey, and other selections.

Inside, the cabin features a wraparound driver-centric layout, with the dashboard highlighted by matte brushed panels and soft-touch slush-moulded trim. A dual-screen setup incorporates a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display (specifications vary depending on the variant). Higher-spec Binrui COOL trims feature sports seats wrapped in a combination of leather and suede, paired with 72-colour ambient lighting and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel to elevate the sporty cabin feel. Tactile physical buttons are retained for the air-conditioning controls for easy blind operation while driving.

Powertrain and Performance

From the 2022 model year onwards, the Binrui COOL series comes standard across the range with Geely’s Jinqing 1.5TD high-pressure direct-injection four-cylinder turbocharged engine (engine code BHE15-EFZ), delivering 133 kW (approx. 181 hp) and 290 Nm of torque, available between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm. Mated to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in a front-wheel-drive configuration, it achieves a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h, with a WLTC rated fuel consumption of 5.9 L/100 km running on RON 92 petrol. Independent performance tests clocked a 0–100 km/h time of 7.43 seconds and a 100–0 km/h braking distance of 38.13 metres.

The original 2018 Binrui offered a choice between a 1.0T three-cylinder engine (100 kW / 136 hp, 205 Nm, paired with a 6-speed DCT) and a 1.4T four-cylinder engine (98 kW / 133 hp, 215 Nm, paired with a CVT), before later revisions unified the lineup under the 1.5T powertrain.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the Binrui adopts a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with a monocoque body, featuring front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam suspension. Steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, with braking managed by front ventilated discs, rear solid discs, and an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). It rides on 205/50 R17 tyres, complemented by a space-saver spare tyre. The vehicle comes standard with the Bosch ESP 9.3 electronic stability programme. Drivers can toggle between three drive modes: Sport, Eco, and Standard/Comfort. The chassis tuning leans towards a firmer, sportier setup, offering taut suspension damping, clear road feedback, and confident cornering control, though rear passenger comfort is slightly compromised over rough road surfaces.

Cabin and Equipment

The centerpiece of the in-car tech is the Geely Galaxy OS infotainment system, powered by an ECARX E02 automotive-grade chip with support for full-vehicle FOTA updates. The 12.3-inch central touchscreen supports GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, telematics, 4G LTE network, Wi-Fi hotspot, and intelligent voice control (for multimedia, navigation, phone, air-conditioning, and sunroof). The voice interaction system supports AI smart voice control. For charging, three USB/Type-C ports are provided (two in front, one in the rear).

In terms of comfort features, faux leather upholstery is standard across the board, with higher trims offering an optional leather/suede combination on sport-contoured front seats. The driver's seat comes with 6-way manual adjustment (including 2-way height adjustment), the front passenger seat gets 4-way manual adjustment, and the rear bench supports 60:40 split-folding. Automatic climate control is standard, complete with rear air-conditioning vents. The audio system features a standard 6-speaker setup. High-spec trims are also equipped with an active cabin air cleaning system and an AQS/ION air purification suite.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

On the active and passive safety front, all Binrui variants come standard with driver/front passenger airbags, front side airbags, ABS with EBD, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Traction Control (TCS), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), and a real-time Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) display. The top-spec Leiting Edition adds advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) including Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

For intelligent driving, the range-topping Leiting Edition features Level 2 driver assistance capabilities, packing Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), a 360-degree surround-view camera (reverse camera on Champion Edition), and Lane Centring Assist. Lower-spec variants feature conventional Cruise Control and rear parking sensors. Notably, when the first-generation Binrui was launched in 2018, it claimed Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability via its Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system, setting a class-leading benchmark among RM100,000-bracket sedans at the time.

Market Performance and Reviews

Since its introduction in 2018, the Geely Binrui has built solid traction in the A-segment family sedan market on the back of its sporty positioning and value-for-money proposition. With its 7.1-second century sprint, the Binrui COOL series stands out as one of the most potent performers in its category, appealing strongly to young buyers seeking spirited performance. By 2025, starting prices across the range have been lowered to RM94,800.

In terms of user feedback, owners widely praise the Binrui's dynamic styling, punchy performance, and solid chassis feel. Motoring media consider the Binrui to offer exceptional value in the RM100,000 price range, praising its youthful looks, tech-forward cockpit, and class-leading driving dynamics, although the earlier three-cylinder variant drew criticism for NVH refinement (a concern addressed by moving to the 1.5T four-cylinder engine). In on-paper comparisons, the Binrui's powertrain specifications outmuscle rivals like the Changan Eado PLUS 1.4T (158 hp) and Chery Arrizo 5 GT 1.6T (197 hp).

Recall Notice: In October 2025, Zhejiang Geely Automobile Co., Ltd. filed a recall campaign in line with regulatory guidelines, covering 46,108 units of the 2019 Binrui 1.0T-6DCT and Binrui 1.0T BJ6 produced between 17 December 2018 and 31 March 2020. The recall stemmed from ambiguous engine oil specification markings on the oil filler cap and in the owner's manual, which could cause owners to use incompatible engine oil grades, potentially risking engine damage under extreme conditions.

In summary, as Geely Auto’s key contender in the compact sports sedan segment, the Geely Binrui has matured through its evolution into the Binrui COOL, anchoring its market appeal on a 1.5T+7DCT powertrain, Level 2 smart driving tech, and assertive styling. The 2024–2025 line-up has further honed its market edge through streamlined equipment packages and sharper pricing. For young buyers with a budget around RM100,000 looking for strong performance and sporty character, the Binrui COOL series remains a compelling option.
