Volvo Cars has officially announced that Apple Music will be integrated natively into its Android-based infotainment systems, marking a significant enhancement for owners of compatible models. The rollout, set to commence via an over-the-air (OTA) software update, will reach more than two million Volvo vehicles worldwide, including those in Malaysia.

Volvo’s latest move addresses a long-standing demand among Malaysian drivers who have been relying on smartphone mirroring or Bluetooth streaming to access their favorite playlists. With this update, drivers will be able to log directly into their Apple Account from the car’s central display, gaining seamless access to their existing library, curated playlists, and personalised recommendations without requiring a phone connection.

The integration will be factory-fitted on upcoming models, such as the highly anticipated Volvo EX60, which is expected to begin deliveries in the coming months. For existing owners, the update will be delivered progressively through the car’s OTA system, ensuring a hassle-free upgrade experience.
For those who have opted for the premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system—available on the EX60, EX90, and ES90—the Apple Music experience will be elevated with Spatial Audio support, powered by Dolby Atmos. This technology delivers a three-dimensional, immersive audio environment that places the listener at the centre of the performance, whether it is a live concert recording or the latest studio release.

“Many of our customers use Apple Music on their phones or in their homes today,” said Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo Cars Head of Global Software Engineering. “By bringing Apple Music directly into our cars, we’re making them an extraordinary place to experience music. You’ll feel as if you’re right in the middle of a concert hall or an arena during your favourite live performance or immersed in the latest music in Spatial Audio exactly as the artist intended — a truly emotional listening experience.”
The OTA update is applicable to a wide range of Volvo models from the 2020 model year onward. This includes the EX90, ES90, XC90, S90, V90, XC60, S60, V60, XC40, EX40, and EC40. Volvo notes that the rollout will be staggered depending on the specific model and market, with no firm timeline disclosed for the Malaysian market as yet.
To mark the launch, Volvo is offering eligible owners a free three-month subscription to Apple Music, valid until 6-July 2027. The offer can be redeemed through the Volvo Cars app. For existing subscribers using other streaming services such as Spotify or Tidal, Volvo has provided a tool to transfer music libraries seamlessly to Apple Music.
This announcement comes on the back of Volvo’s largest OTA update in history, which brought significant user interface improvements to models dating back to 2020. The Swedish automaker continues to push the boundaries of in-car digital experiences, emphasising convenience and premium audio for Malaysian drivers.
As a Malaysian automotive enthusiast, I see this as a promising step forward for the local Volvo community. With Apple Music’s extensive catalogue and Spatial Audio capabilities, daily commutes and long drives across the North-South Expressway could soon feel like a front-row seat at a live concert.
