At the 2026 Chengdu Motor Show that opens today, BMW is showing its Neue Klasse i3 Long Wheelbase Version, and for the first time, we can see the cabin as well.
Based on the Neue Klasse platform, the long-wheelbase i3 is due to enter production in China in January 2027.

The new i3 looks quite different from the BMWs we're used to, especially at the front. The familiar kidney grille is no longer a traditional grille, but a closed-off structure with an illuminated outline.
LED lighting runs around the edge of the panel and flows into the headlights on either side, giving the i3 a distinctive light-up kidney grille while keeping the familiar BMW shape.

Look closer and you'll see the new segmented LED daytime running lights, shaped like the number "7". The angled light elements inside the headlamps continue into the illuminated grille surround, making the whole front end look wider.
BMW has also moved away from its familiar angel-eye light signature for this new design, which looks set to become one of the defining features of the Neue Klasse models.
The bonnet still gets the raised creases seen on the petrol 3 Series, while the sharp air channels at the front corners add some of the sportiness we associate with BMW and help improve the car's aerodynamics.
From the side, the new i3 LWB keeps BMW's short front overhang, long wheelbase and Hofmeister kink, but with a few changes to suit its electric underpinnings.

The doors get semi-hidden handles, while the smooth shoulder line and fastback-style roof give the i3 a sleek profile and help reduce drag.
At the rear, BMW has kept things relatively simple, with a pair of near full-width LED tail lights extending towards the sides. The sharp lighting signature ties in neatly with the headlights up front.

There's also a small ducktail spoiler above the tail lights, adding a touch of sportiness while helping with high-speed stability.
The long-wheelbase BMW i3 is based on BMW's Neue Klasse platform, with an 800V electrical architecture and sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. Its claimed CLTC range exceeds 1,000 km.
It also comes with BMW's latest Heart of Joy central control unit and dynamic performance control system as standard, alongside Driving Assistant for driver assistance.
