In Malaysia's hot weather and stop-start city traffic, especially during Kuala Lumpur's rush hours, many drivers have the same question every time the engine shuts off at a traffic light: Does auto start-stop really save fuel, and will it wear out the car?
Here's a closer look at how the system works, what it means for your car and whether it makes sense to leave it switched on in Malaysia.

The principle is fairly simple.
When you come to a complete stop at a traffic light or in a traffic jam, the car's computer can automatically switch off the engine to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
As soon as you release the brake or press the accelerator, the engine restarts, usually in less than a second.

One of the biggest concerns is that repeatedly switching the engine off and starting it again will accelerate wear on the engine and battery.
In reality, cars equipped with start-stop systems are designed with this extra workload in mind.
Stronger starter and battery: Cars with auto start-stop typically use reinforced starters and batteries designed for frequent cycling. The batteries are usually AGM or EFB units and are built to handle far more start cycles than conventional batteries.
Lubrication during restart: When the engine stops, an oil film remains inside the engine, while some engines also use specially designed coatings or components to reduce friction during restarting. The system is therefore designed to minimise the wear that would otherwise occur during repeated starts.

The technology itself is well established, but Malaysia's climate and traffic conditions can make the system less appealing in certain situations.
The air-con may become less effective: Malaysia is hot, and when the engine switches off, the air-conditioning compressor may also stop operating. The blower can continue circulating the remaining cool air, but in heavy traffic, the cabin temperature can start rising surprisingly quickly.
The battery has to work harder: Frequent start-stop operation in hot weather, combined with loads from the infotainment system, dashcam and other electrical equipment, can put additional demands on the battery. The specialised battery used by these systems can also cost more to replace than a conventional one.
Repeated restarting can affect comfort: In extremely heavy traffic, where the car is constantly moving a few metres and stopping again, the engine can cycle on and off repeatedly. Depending on the car, this can make the driving experience feel less smooth and become irritating after a while.

Consider switching it off in heavy traffic: If you are stuck in a major traffic jam or have just got into a car that has been sitting in the heat, you may prefer to press the auto start-stop off button, usually marked "A Off". This keeps the engine running and allows the air-con compressor to continue cooling the cabin.
Leave it on when traffic is flowing: On motorways or roads with relatively few stops, or when you expect to remain stationary at traffic lights for longer periods, leaving the system on can help reduce fuel consumption.
Check the battery regularly: Cars with start-stop systems rely heavily on the battery being in good condition. Have it checked during regular servicing, particularly as the battery gets older, to reduce the risk of an unexpected breakdown.

Auto start-stop is not going to cause serious damage to a car simply because the engine starts and stops frequently. The system and its components are specifically designed to handle that kind of use.
Whether it is worth keeping switched on in Malaysia is a different question.
In heavy traffic, the main trade-off is often cabin comfort rather than fuel savings. With the engine off, the air-con may not cool as effectively, while constant stop-start cycling can also make the drive less comfortable.
That's why some Malaysian drivers simply get into the habit of switching it off as soon as they start the car.
Do you leave auto start-stop switched on, or is "A Off" the first button you press?
