GWM WEY G9: 442 PS, 170 km EV Range, RM 269,800 – Is This Luxury MPV Worth Buying?

On 29 January 2026, GWM Malaysia officially launched the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV at MITEC, Kuala Lumpur. This marks the first MPV model from Great Wall Motor's luxury brand, WEY, and represents GWM's second CKD (locally assembled) model in Malaysia, following the Haval H6 HEV.

Priced at RM 269,800 on-the-road (OTR) without insurance, is this seven-seater plug-in hybrid luxury MPV worth the asking price? This article breaks down the details to see if it makes financial sense.

Pricing and CKD: Why RM 269,800?

The G9 is offered in Malaysia in a single variant priced at RM 269,800 (OTR without insurance), with three exterior colour options: Wisdom Grey, Aurora White, and Nebula Black.

This price tag is significantly lower than the initial estimate of "under RM 300,000". The key to this competitive pricing lies in local assembly (CKD). The G9 is assembled at EP Manufacturing's (EPMB) plant in Pegoh, Melaka. Cui Anqi, Managing Director of GWM Malaysia, highlighted that the WEY G9 represents "a fusion of world-class engineering and local manufacturing capability". Crucially, GWM is positioning Malaysia as its production and export hub for the ASEAN region, with the first batch of CKD G9 units already exported to Thailand. Note that the G9 is not Malaysia's first CKD Chinese PHEV MPV, as the GAC M8 PHEV arrived in the market earlier.

For peace of mind, the G9 comes with a 6-year/unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, alongside an 8-year/180,000 km warranty for the powertrain (covering the battery, drive motor, and motor control unit). The first 1,000 customers will receive an early-bird package including 5 years of free maintenance (inclusive of parts and labour), 5 years of telematics connectivity, a complimentary home wallbox charger, and a free 15.6-inch rear entertainment screen (installation included). Existing GWM owners are also eligible for an additional RM 3,000 rebate.

Powertrain: 442 PS, 642 Nm, and 0-100 km/h in 5.7 Seconds

The heart of the G9 is GWM's latest Hi4 Intelligent Hybrid System.

Engine: It features a 1.5-litre (1,499 cc) turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine that outputs 150 PS (110 kW) and 240 Nm of torque.

Electric Motors: The Hi4 system utilises a front electric motor (80 kW / 170 Nm) integrated into the 4-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and a rear electric motor (135 kW / 232 Nm).

Combined Output: Working in tandem, the system delivers a combined output of 442 PS (325 kW) and 642 Nm of torque. This enables the heavy MPV, which has a kerb weight of 2,803 kg, to sprint from 0-100 km/h in a swift 5.7 seconds, onto a top speed of 190 km/h. For a vehicle of this size, this performance is quite impressive.

The Hi4 setup also features the iTVC (intelligent Torque Vectoring Control) system, which dynamically distributes torque between the front and rear axles based on road conditions. During normal driving, the vehicle operates primarily in rear-wheel drive; when extra traction is required or on slippery roads, the system seamlessly transitions to all-wheel drive.

Range and Charging: 170 km + 1,000 km

Battery & Range: The G9 is equipped with a 44.2 kWh NMC battery pack, offering a pure electric range of 170 km (NEDC) or approximately 145 km (WLTP). With a full charge and a full 58-litre fuel tank, the total combined range exceeds 1,000 km.

Charging: It supports DC fast charging up to 60 kW, which juices the battery from 30% to 80% in 26 minutes. Regular AC charging at 6.6 kW takes about 6.5 hours for a 15% to 100% charge. It also features a 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function to power external appliances.

Fuel Economy: Under NEDC testing, the rated fuel consumption is just 1.2 L/100 km. Even when the battery charge drops to a low state of 20%, the hybrid system still manages a respectable fuel economy of around 6.2 L/100 km.

Dimensions and Space: Larger Than the Toyota Alphard

The G9 measures 5,050 mm in length, 1,985 mm in width, and 1,900 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,085 mm.

For comparison, the Toyota Alphard is 4,945 mm long and 1,850 mm wide – making the G9 both longer and wider. The G9's 3,085 mm wheelbase also outstretches the Alphard's 3,000 mm wheelbase.

The cabin adopts a 2-2-3 seven-seater layout. The second row is equipped with zero-gravity captain seats that feature one-touch recline, 10-point massage, and ventilation functions. The third-row seats are also designed to comfortably accommodate adults. With all seats in place, the boot capacity stands at 233 litres, which expands to 1,725 litres when the second and third rows are folded.

Under the skin, the G9 rides on a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link all-aluminium alloy suspension setup, paired with Frequency Response Dampers (FRD) to strike a balance between ride comfort and handling stability.

Premium touches include Nappa leather upholstery, dual sunroofs (front sunroof + rear panoramic glass roof), a hands-free power tailgate, a 12.5-litre dual-zone fridge/warmer (0-50°C), tri-zone automatic climate control, and a 21-speaker premium sound system. For class-leading NVH, the MPV utilises double-glazed acoustic glass and active noise cancellation, keeping cabin noise to a quiet 63.4 dB when cruising at 120 km/h.

Market response to the G9 has surpassed expectations. Within just one week of its launch, the MPV secured over 800 bookings. GWM Malaysia Chief Operating Officer Roslan Abdullah noted that the performance "reflects strong initial demand and validates the capability of Malaysia’s local assembly ecosystem.".

Significantly, the G9 emerged as the best-selling model in Malaysia's luxury MPV segment for the first quarter of 2026. Malaysia’s legendary songstress, Siti Nurhaliza binti Tarudin, was announced as the first owner and official brand ambassador for the WEY G9.
