Proton Saga MC3 to Spawn New SUVs and MPV: Here’s What We Know

Proton has been making waves since launching the Saga MC3 last November—and it’s not stopping there. The popular entry-level sedan, which has already registered over 20,000 units locally since its debut, is set to spawn three new derivatives based on its Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) platform, codenamed AMA02, AMA05, and AMA06.

Proton has confirmed these new models will include two SUVs and one MPV—made possible by the AMA platform’s flexibility, which allows wheelbase and track widths to be extended by up to 290 mm. For Malaysians who love practical, family-friendly vehicles, the upcoming MPV is particularly exciting, and Photoshop expert Theophilus Chin has shared his take on what it might look like.

Chin’s rendering, dubbed “Ersaga” (a mix of Proton’s former MPV Ertiga and the Saga MC3), draws inspiration from the second-generation Suzuki Ertiga—an MPV that was once sold locally by Proton and known for its spacious cabin. He’s updated the Ertiga’s design with the Saga MC3’s front fascia, bumper, and wheels, while the rear gets the sedan’s full-width tail lamps and a black lower bumper with diffuser-style fins. The rear window line has also been adjusted to match the Saga’s sleek look, doing away with the Ertiga’s vertical tail lamp extension into the D-pillars.

For context, the current Proton Saga MC3 is available in three local variants: 1.5 Standard (RM38,990), 1.5 Executive (RM44,990), and 1.5 Premium (RM49,990)—all on-the-road prices excluding insurance, with a 5-year/150,000 km warranty and three free labour services. It runs on a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with 120 hp and 150 Nm of torque, paired with either a 4-speed automatic or CVT transmission.

As for the upcoming MPV (and one of the SUVs), Proton revealed last December they’ll be powered by a naturally aspirated, port-injected version of the DHE (dedicated hybrid engine) from the i-GT engine family. This will be paired with a DHT120 transmission, meaning its performance will be more modest than the eMas 7 PHEV—ideal for budget-conscious Malaysian families looking for fuel efficiency and practicality.

Proton’s AMA platform is a key part of its growth strategy, not just locally but also for exports (the Saga MC3 recently launched in Brunei as its first international market). For Malaysians, these new derivatives mean more affordable, homegrown options across popular segments—from compact sedans to family MPVs and SUVs.
