Lotus Makes Dramatic U-Turn: New Type 135 Hypercar Brings Back V8 Hybrid Power

Lotus, the iconic British sports car brand that once vowed to go fully electric, has made a surprising "U-turn"!

Recently, the Geely-owned marque released a teaser image of its upcoming hypercar, codenamed Type 135. Not only is it confirmed to feature a long-awaited V8 hybrid powertrain, but it is also scheduled to make its global debut in 2028.

The Highlight: V8 Power Returns

For Malaysian petrolheads, this is exciting news. Alongside the teaser, Lotus announced a major adjustment to its "Vision 80" strategy. The brand is moving away from its previous all-electric goal by 2028 and adopting a multi-powertrain approach that includes ICE, Hybrid, and EV models.

The Type 135 is positioned as the spiritual successor to the legendary Lotus Esprit — marking the first time a production Lotus will feature a V8 engine since the Esprit ended production in 2004.

Design: A Production Evolution of Theory 1?

From the rear teaser image, the design language looks incredibly aggressive:

  • A massive rear diffuser signals serious track capability.
  • Prominent dual circular exhaust tips proudly announce its combustion heart.
  • The overall design draws strong inspiration from the 2024 Theory 1 electric concept, with rumours suggesting it may even retain the striking three-seat layout (with a central driving position), paying homage to the McLaren F1.

Performance: Aiming for the 1,000 hp Club

The powertrain is the biggest highlight:

  • A mid-mounted V8 hybrid system with total output expected to exceed 1,000 PS (approx. 986 hp).
  • Industry speculation points to a possible Mercedes-AMG V8 source (given their existing partnership on the Emira), while others believe it could come from Horse, the Geely-Renault powertrain joint venture.

Production & Positioning

Unlike the Eletre and Emeya, which are produced in China, the Type 135 will be built in Europe — most likely at Lotus' historic Hethel plant in the UK. It is expected to go head-to-head with elite rivals such as the Ferrari 12Cilindri and Lamborghini Temerario.

In Malaysia, Lotus has always been synonymous with razor-sharp handling and lightweight engineering. While the brand's earlier full-EV pivot disappointed many purists, the return of a screaming V8 is a welcome move that acknowledges market demand.

If the Type 135 reaches Malaysian shores in 2028, its intoxicating V8 soundtrack will surely tempt local collectors and enthusiasts to open their wallets.
