The Last Manual M3: 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter Bows Out with Pure RWD Glory

For true Bimmers, this is undoubtedly one of the most emotional moments of the year.

BMW M Division has just released the ultimate send-off for the sixth-generation (G80) M3 — the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter. This is also the first time in M3 CS history that a 6-speed manual transmission has been offered. The name "Handschalter" is German for "manual shifter".

However, Malaysian fans shouldn't get their hopes up too high just yet. The factory has confirmed that this limited-edition model is exclusive to the North American market (US and Canada). That means it will only be available in left-hand drive (LHD), and Malaysia will not receive it officially.

Still, this doesn't stop it from becoming a future collector's item and a potential "financial unicorn". The new car has a starting price of USD 107,100 (approximately RM 426,000) in North America, with limited production scheduled to begin in July.

Powertrain Tuning: Sacrificing Output for the Manual?

The M3 CS Handschalter is still powered by the legendary S58 3.0-litre inline-six twin-turbo engine. However, due to the torque limitations of the manual gearbox, BMW has detuned it slightly:

  • Maximum Power: 480 PS (473 hp / 353 kW)
  • Peak Torque: 550 Nm

Compared to the standard M3 CS (550 PS / 650 Nm) with the 8-speed automatic and M xDrive all-wheel drive, the manual version has lower output and reverts to pure rear-wheel drive (RWD).

Performance: Slower on Paper, But Far More Engaging

Due to the lack of all-wheel-drive traction and the physical limitations of manual shifting, the 0–96 km/h (0–60 mph) sprint takes 3.8 seconds (0.6 seconds slower than the automatic AWD version). With the M Driver's Package, the top speed can reach 290 km/h.

Editor's Side Note: If you're chasing raw straight-line speed and lap times, the automatic M3 CS is clearly superior. But the Handschalter is all about that pure "man-and-machine" connection and the joy of three pedals — something that numbers simply cannot capture.

Ultimate Lightweighting: 34 kg Lighter

As a true "CS" (Competition Sport) model, weight reduction is key. BMW has used extensive carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) components, including the bonnet, roof, front splitter, mirror caps, rear diffuser, and spoiler. The interior also features carbon fibre trim and aggressive M Carbon bucket seats. Combined with a titanium exhaust silencer that saves 3.6 kg, if the owner opts for the M Carbon Ceramic Brakes, the manual CS is a full 34 kg (75 lbs) lighter than the standard manual M3.

Chassis Upgrades: Infused with M4 CSL DNA

This is no simple "add a manual gearbox" special. BMW M has given it dedicated tuning:

  • Suspension borrowed from the hardcore M4 CSL, with exclusive auxiliary springs.
  • Ride height lowered by 6 mm for a lower centre of gravity.
  • Exclusive calibrations for the M Servotronic steering, wheel camber, and electronic systems.

It rides on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Style 927M forged wheels (Gold Bronze or matte black), with 275/35ZR19 front and 285/30ZR20 rear tyres. Owners can also pay extra to opt for ultra-high-grip track tyres.

Visuals and Interior: Combat-Ready Yet Usable

The car retains the signature CS look with a frameless kidney grille outlined in red and striking yellow daytime running lights inspired by GT racing cars. Two no-cost colours are available: Isle of Man Green and Black Sapphire. For an extra USD 4,500 (approx. RM 18,000), buyers can choose heritage Individual colours like Imola Red or Techno Violet.

Despite its hardcore nature, daily usability hasn't been sacrificed. It still comes with a Harman Kardon sound system, dual-zone climate control, and Lane Departure Warning. An optional "Daily Driver Package" can add a power tailgate and Head-Up Display.

Conclusion

As the "final send-off" for the G80-generation M3, the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter is not just a performance machine — it is a love letter to hardcore manual enthusiasts. Although Malaysia won't get the right-hand-drive version, this pure RWD + 6-speed manual + limited CS formula is destined to become a future classic collector's car from the moment it launches.

To all Malaysian Bimmers: If your budget allows, would you try to import one for collection, or are you patiently waiting for the next-generation pure electric or hybrid M3?
