Malaysia’s MIROS Seeks Public Input for National Autonomous Vehicle Roadmap

Malaysia’s transport ministry, in collaboration with the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Cyberview subsidiary Futurise, has officially opened a public consultation period to gather feedback on the nation’s proposed autonomous vehicle (AV) roadmap. The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure a safe, phased, and structured deployment of AV technology across the country.

In a statement released today, MIROS emphasised that the roadmap is designed to serve as a foundational reference for shaping policy, legislation, safety requirements, infrastructure readiness, testing mechanisms, and public acceptance. The institute noted that the roadmap will also address the overall AV industry ecosystem, helping Malaysia transition from conventional motoring to a more automated future.

“The proposed roadmap is expected to serve as an important reference in shaping national approaches to policy, legislation, safety requirements, infrastructure readiness, testing mechanisms, public acceptance and the overall autonomous vehicle industry ecosystem,” the statement read.

The public is invited to submit their feedback online via a dedicated portal before June 30, 2026. This move follows recent remarks by Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Sim Tze Tzin, who confirmed that Malaysia is targeting Level 3 autonomous driving capability by the year 2030. Level 3 autonomy, also known as conditional automation, allows the vehicle to handle most driving tasks under specific conditions, though the driver must remain available to take over when requested.

The autonomous vehicle roadmap is seen as a critical step in aligning Malaysia’s regulatory framework with global best practices, while also catering to local road conditions and mobility needs. MIROS has been actively conducting research on AV safety and testing protocols, with an emphasis on ensuring that the technology can be integrated safely alongside conventional vehicles.

Industry observers note that the public consultation signals a transparent and inclusive approach to policymaking in an area that will have far-reaching implications for both the automotive sector and road safety. As Malaysia positions itself as a regional hub for automotive innovation, the development of a clear AV roadmap is expected to attract investment from technology companies, automakers, and mobility service providers.

The feedback gathered will likely influence the final version of the roadmap, which is anticipated to outline milestones for infrastructure upgrades, data privacy regulations, and liability frameworks in the event of AV-related incidents. With the 2030 target for Level 3 autonomy in mind, the roadmap is expected to include a series of intermediate goals for testing, pilot programmes, and regulatory approvals.

For those interested in contributing, further details and the feedback form can be found on the official MIROS website. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2026.
