Nissan recently unveiled the 2026 Nissan Versa in Mexico, a model known as the Almera in Malaysia and other Asian markets. Despite being marketed by the manufacturer as an "all-new facelift," the vehicle retains the chassis of the previous-generation Versa, with significant upgrades to its exterior, interior, and technological features to maintain its competitiveness in the entry-level sedan segment.

Visually, the 2026 Versa keeps the overall body silhouette, A/B/C pillar details, door designs, window frames, and side mirror shapes of its predecessor – clear signs that it shares the same underlying chassis. The most notable exterior update is the new two-tier headlight design: the upper section features LED strips for turn signals and daytime running lights, while the main headlight units are integrated on both sides of the front bumper’s grille, separated from the black trim around the Nissan emblem. This design aligns with the latest trend of split-headlight configurations.
The rear end sees more subtle changes, retaining some basic design elements from the previous generation such as the taillight contours when viewed from the side. However, the entire taillight assembly has been redesigned, with a thick black trim piece connecting the two sides to mimic a full-width taillight effect. The C-pillar also retains the floating roof design from the prior model, paired with new 17-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the cabin, the upgrades are equally prominent. The entire center console has been redesigned, highlighted by a new 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is paired with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a digital speedometer, replacing the old analog dials. The interior also features denim-like fabric trim with beige stitching, creating a younger, more vibrant atmosphere and a noticeable improvement in quality compared to the previous Almera sold in Malaysia.
Another notable interior feature is the Bose premium sound system with 8 speakers – a generous offering for an entry-level sedan. However, it is expected that the Bose sound system will not be standard across all variants and will only be available on higher-spec models, similar to other features in its class.

One downside is that despite the "facelift" label, the 2026 Versa still lacks electronic parking brake (EPB) and Auto Hold functions. Its key competitors in Malaysia, the Toyota Vios and Honda City, already offer these features on their higher-spec variants, enabling full-speed adaptive cruise control (ACC) with complete stop-and-go capability. The new Versa retains the traditional mechanical handbrake lever, which means it will likely not support full-speed ACC either.
In terms of safety, the Mexican-spec Versa comes with 6 airbags, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Again, these advanced safety features are expected to be exclusive to higher-spec variants rather than standard across the range.

For powertrain, the Mexican-market Versa continues to use the existing 1.6-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 118 horsepower and 154 Nm of torque, mated to either a CVT or 5-speed manual transmission. Importantly, for Malaysian buyers, the local Almera (which is the Versa’s counterpart here) has been equipped with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine since its 4th generation – delivering 100 PS and 152 Nm of torque. While this three-cylinder turbo engine has received mixed feedback from local consumers, Nissan is likely to retain it for the Malaysian-market Almera due to market adaptation.
The current 4th-generation Almera in Malaysia was first launched globally in 2019 and officially went on sale locally at the end of 2020. Despite its sales performance being lower than the previous generation, Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM), Nissan’s official distributor in Malaysia, is not expected to abandon the entry-level sedan segment. As such, the new 2026 Nissan Versa is likely to be introduced in Malaysia under the Almera nameplate in the near future.
