MG S5 EV is now locally assembled (CKD) in Malaysia. This occasion marks MG’s first CKD model in the country, with the inaugural units rolling off the production line at EPMB’s Plant 2 in Pegoh, Melaka, this morning. The roll-off ceremony was officiated by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh. Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, stated that the CKD roll-off of the MG S5 EV represents a significant milestone for MG in Malaysia, reflecting the brand’s long-term commitment to localisation. This initiative is expected to enhance accessibility to MG vehicles for Malaysian customers, strengthen the country’s automotive supply chain, and provide greater support to local vendors.

Notably, bookings for the CKD MG S5 EV are now open, and the model offers several enhancements compared to the CBU version launched in May 2025. The CKD MG S5 EV features an upgraded power output, delivering 151kW and 350 Nm of torque—representing an increase of 26kW and 100 Nm over the CBU variant. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels, and the vehicle is equipped with rear multi-link suspension to ensure a smoother driving experience. Powered by a 62 kWh LFP battery manufactured by CATL, a globally recognized reliable battery producer, the CKD MG S5 EV supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in approximately 26 minutes. Its WLTP range has been improved to 446 km, which is sufficient for daily commutes and weekend excursions across Malaysia. In terms of warranty coverage, the battery comes with an 8-year or 180,000 km warranty, the motor control unit with an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty, and the entire vehicle with a 7-year or 150,000 km warranty, providing long-term peace of mind for owners.

In terms of dimensions and practicality, the S5 EV measures 4,476 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width, and 1,621 mm in height. It is slightly larger than the popular BYD Atto 3, a commonly chosen EV among Malaysians, but smaller than the Proton eMas 7. While the vehicle does not feature a front trunk (frunk), it offers a boot capacity of 453 litres, which can be expanded to 1,441 litres when the rear seats are folded—suitable for family trips or large shopping loads. Currently, only the range-topping Lux variant is available for the CKD model, with the Com variants no longer offered. The Lux variant is fully equipped with features favoured by Malaysian consumers, including leatherette seats, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats, and a hands-free power tailgate. Safety standards are also exceptional, as the vehicle is equipped with MG’s ADAS 2.5 package (encompassing traffic jam assist and intelligent cruise control) and holds a 5-star safety rating from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP, ensuring occupant safety on Malaysian roads.

The estimated price of the CKD MG S5 EV is RM120,000, with the final pricing and comprehensive details to be announced in the coming weeks. An attractive early bird promotion is available, offering benefits worth up to RM10,000, including a RM7,000 rebate, a complimentary 7kW wallbox charger (valued at RM2,000), and RM1,000 in charging credits—providing significant value for early bookers. For reference, the CBU MG S5 EV underwent a nationwide price reduction of RM8,000 in October 2025, with the Lux Long Range variant previously priced at RM128,548. This makes the CKD model a more cost-effective option, offering enhanced power and features at a competitive price point.

EPMB’s Pegoh plant in Melaka is poised to become a CKD hub for Chinese EV brands, currently housing GWM with Xpeng set to join in the near future. SAIC Motor Malaysia projects a monthly production volume of 120 to 180 units for the CKD MG S5 EV, with an estimated annual output of 1,500 to 2,000 units in 2026—facilitating shorter delivery times for local buyers.
