Big news has been circulating in Malaysia’s luxury car market recently: the 2026 Lexus IS300 is expected to be officially introduced to the local market next month. This iconic rear-wheel drive (RWD) premium sedan, which has faded from the local consumer spotlight, is set to make its return, with the main variant highly likely to be the 2.0L turbocharged version that is the flagship offering in regional markets. It will directly compete with two major rivals in the same segment — the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class — bringing a new option for local car enthusiasts who prioritise driving dynamics.

Exterior: Refreshed Facelift, Aggressive Low-Slung Stance, F Sport Trim Boosts Performance Appeal

The third-generation XE30 Lexus IS has now been on the market for 12 years. That said, the 2026 model is not an all-new generation, but a heavily refined facelift built on the existing platform, with an updated look that aligns with modern aesthetic trends and a sharper overall presence. Up front, it retains Lexus’ signature Spindle Grille, now positioned lower with dedicated air intake vents, creating an ultra-low centre of gravity and a grounded, sporty profile. Visual aggressiveness is significantly enhanced, ditching the more subdued, elegant vibe of older models for a more performance-oriented edge.

The rear end also gets a noticeable update with a full-width taillight design, which widens the car’s visual stance, brings a more modern touch, and follows current luxury car design trends, boosting instant recognisability. The F Sport variant adds three exclusive sporty extras: 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels, a ducktail spoiler, and red brake calipers, amplifying the sporty atmosphere to perfectly match the aesthetic preferences of younger buyers.

Interior: Outdated Layout Replaced, Digital Upgrades Balance Practicality and Premium Feel

The interior marks a major breakthrough for this facelift, with a complete overhaul of the controversial traditional layout of the outgoing model, moving fully towards modernity and complementing the exterior’s sporty updates for a cohesive upgrade in both exterior and interior quality.

It features Lexus’ latest sport steering wheel, paired with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The brand’s long-standing touchpad controller has been removed, and all in-car charging ports are updated to USB Type-C, delivering a more intuitive operating logic and enhanced practicality.

In terms of specifications, it comes standard with a 10-speaker Lexus Premium Sound System, with an optional upgrade to the high-end 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system. The cabin is equipped with ambient lighting offering 14 theme colours and 50 customisable shades, while a new exclusive "PROMINENCE" interior colour scheme and Forged Bamboo trim are added, elevating both the luxurious ambience and overall cabin quality.

At the same time, the cabin retains plenty of physical buttons, avoiding an overzealous push for full digitalisation. Durability and ease of use with blind operation remain core strengths of the Lexus brand.

Performance: 2.0L Turbo + 8AT + RWD, Linear Tuning is the Key Appeal

Based on regional market strategy and local introduction feasibility, the variant coming to Malaysia will most likely be powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This powertrain has been proven in the Southeast Asian market, delivering approximately 245 PS of maximum output and 350 Nm of peak torque, mated to a classic 8-speed automatic transmission with a pure rear-wheel drive layout — a rare RWD setup in the current premium sedan segment.

The highlight of this powertrain is not extreme on-paper figures, but Lexus’ signature refined tuning: throttle response is linear and smooth, without the abrupt surge common in turbocharged engines, with strong and seamless mid-range acceleration that suits both daily commuting and mountain road driving. In contrast, the Thai market offers the IS300h with a 2.5L naturally aspirated hybrid powertrain, focused on quietness, smoothness and better fuel efficiency, positioning it as a comfort-focused luxury sedan. The North American market still offers a 3.5L V6 naturally aspirated variant, with linear, pure and mechanical naturally aspirated acceleration that differs entirely from turbocharged units. Realistically, however, large-displacement variants face extremely high barriers to official introduction in Malaysia due to local policies and cost constraints. This makes the 2.0L turbo IS300 the most suitable and feasible option for the local market.

Chassis & Handling: Dual Upgrades to Suspension and Steering, Enhanced Driving Dynamics

The core upgrades of the 2026 IS focus on driving dynamics, perfectly fitting its identity as a "driver’s car". The steering system is replaced with a rack-parallel electric power steering (EPS) with a variable gear ratio mechanism, delivering more linear steering feel, sharper precision and vastly improved rear-end responsiveness. The suspension is also upgraded to a linear solenoid valve-type AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension), balancing daily ride comfort and body support during spirited driving, with far better stability than the outgoing model and an ideal balance between comfort and handling.

Safety: Full Upgrade to LSS+ Suite, Top-Tier Active Safety in Segment

The 2026 IS is equipped with the latest Lexus Safety System+ active safety suite as standard. It adds Proactive Driving Assist (PDA), which enables predictive deceleration for pedestrians, cyclists and junctions. The Pre-Collision System (PCS) is upgraded to detect nighttime cyclists and daytime motorcycles. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) supports voice control with an expanded detection range, while new features include road sign recognition, red light warning and Lane Change Assist (LCA). Advanced Drive, a highway and congestion assist function, enables semi-autonomous driving assistance in heavy traffic at 0–40 km/h, reducing driver fatigue on long journeys. Its active safety performance fully meets modern luxury car standards.

Local Market Analysis: Clear Positioning, Estimated Pricing Around RM300k

In terms of dimensions, the 2026 IS measures approximately 4,710 mm in length, with a wheelbase tuned for driving dynamics rather than rear passenger space. It is positioned squarely as a "luxury sedan for self-driving", not a chauffeured business model focused on rear cabin space, creating differentiated competition against the 3 Series and C-Class.

The Malaysian market is currently dominated by SUVs, with the overall sedan segment contracting, and Lexus Malaysia has focused heavily on SUV models such as the NX and RX in recent years, making the IS’ return a pleasant surprise in itself. Referencing pricing of segment rivals, the new model is estimated to be priced around RM300k. While it will face intense competition from the two German rivals, the IS will still attract a loyal group of buyers who value driving feel over pure brand prestige, thanks to its unique RWD driving dynamics, exceptional reliability and understated luxury brand character.

This information remains a market rumour for now. Official launch timing, pricing and full specifications will be confirmed by Lexus Malaysia, and we will continue to follow up on the latest updates.
