Recently, overseas automotive media have revealed the major plans for the all-new Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet. This open-top version of the legendary off-road icon makes a return after nearly a decade, and is scheduled to go on sale globally in 2028. With its classic boxy silhouette and formidable performance, it is set to become a highly coveted model in the premium off-road segment.

The convertible body style is deeply ingrained in the G-Class's DNA. The first-generation W460 model launched with a two-door short-wheelbase convertible variant back in 1979, while its successor, the W463 convertible, has become a highly collectible vehicle with extremely rare ownership in the Chinese market. In 2017, the Maybach G650 Landaulet, limited to only 99 units, represented the pinnacle of luxury open-top off-roading, leaving a void in this niche segment for nearly a decade. The all-new G63 Cabriolet is a modern tribute to this iconic heritage.
The new model retains the G-Class’s classic boxy design, featuring an extended roof profile similar to the Landaulet variant, a stark contrast to the shorter roof design of previous-generation standard G-Class convertibles. It is highly likely to come with a four-door configuration, significantly boosting practicality. Under the hood, it is equipped with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 mild hybrid engine, delivering a maximum power output of 577 horsepower, and maintains the same rugged off-road performance as the hardtop version.

The new model is scheduled to enter production in the third quarter of 2027 at Mercedes' Graz plant in Austria, the exclusive production base for the G-Class, ensuring exceptional build quality. This open-top G-Class, which blends retro charm and hardcore off-road capability, is certainly a model for Malaysian enthusiasts to watch closely as its local launch timeline unfolds.
