On 22 March, the Geely Boyue EREV, a brand-new long-range range-extended SUV from Geely, officially opened for pre-sale in the Chinese market, with a starting pre-sale price of 127,900 RMB (approximately RM83,000). It has become a highlight in the compact SUV segment thanks to its advanced range-extender technology and family-friendly specifications. As the Boyue shares the same platform and heritage as Malaysia’s Proton X70, the launch of this new model has sparked wide attention among malaysian car fans, who are eager to know when the Proton X70 will receive an update to adopt similar technologies.

As a new range-extended SUV from Geely, the Boyue EREV stands out for its exceptional long range and high fuel efficiency. It delivers a pure electric range of up to 375km and a combined fuel-electric range of 1,525km, making it ideal for daily commuting on pure electric power and long-distance trips without frequent refuelling or recharging. This range-extender powertrain boasts high thermal efficiency, with a fuel consumption of just 4.95L/100km in charge-sustaining mode, proving economical and durable. It supports fast charging, taking only 15 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%, and also features a 6kW external power discharge function, perfect for camping and outdoor electricity use. The battery has passed multiple rigorous safety tests, ensuring reliable daily usage.

The exterior features a sleek, minimalist design with a low drag coefficient that balances aesthetics and energy efficiency, paired with a selection of fresh paint options. The chassis is tuned for comfort with shock absorption and anti-motion sickness calibration, equipped with a 540° panoramic imaging system and Level 2 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), making urban driving and parking much easier. With a 2,778mm wheelbase, it offers generous cabin space for family use, featuring a flat rear floor and expansive storage space when rear seats are folded. The interior also comes with a comfortable electric front passenger seat, smart infotainment system and premium sound system, maximising practicality and comfort.

The popular Proton X70 in Malaysia just received its MC3 facelift in January this year, with upgrades to its petrol powertrain and ride comfort. Given this recent update, a major overhaul is unlikely in the near term. Based on the established product cycle between Geely and Proton, the X70 is expected to adopt the range-extender powertrain alongside the latest design and technological upgrades no earlier than 2027.
Currently, the existing Proton X70 MC3 remains a top choice in Malaysia’s compact SUV market, thanks to its proven petrol powertrain, affordable pricing and high reputation, catering to drivers who prefer traditional combustion-engine vehicles. The launch of the Geely Boyue EREV also signals that Proton will accelerate its new energy vehicle strategy for future SUV models, and local car fans seeking fuel-efficient, long-range options can look forward to its upcoming updated variants.
