Toyota Yaris Cross HEV Arriving in Malaysia: A New Threat to the Corolla Cross?

With test mules frequently spotted in Malaysia, the all-new Toyota Yaris Cross HEV — a B-segment SUV — is gradually lifting its veil. According to multiple sources, this hybrid SUV is highly likely to make its official debut in the near term, further strengthening Toyota's product lineup in Malaysia's competitive entry-level SUV market.

Unlike the Yaris Cross sold in Japan and Europe, this all-new model is built on the DNGA-B platform specifically for Southeast Asia, rather than the TNGA chassis found in the European version. Its dimensions have been precisely optimized at 4,310mm x 1,770mm x 1,615mm, with a 2,620mm wheelbase. While slightly shorter than the Honda HR-V, its other proportions are remarkably similar. This ensures space performance that perfectly aligns with the travel needs of local families, while the 210mm ground clearance is more than capable of handling Malaysia's varied road conditions.

In terms of design, the new car moves away from the urban crossover styling of its European counterpart in favour of a traditional SUV silhouette that caters to Southeast Asian aesthetic preferences. The commanding front fascia features a layered intake grille and slender LED headlights, complemented by bold body lines and a relatively high roofline. This design not only emphasizes stability but also maximises interior volume, distinguishing it from rivals that prioritize sporty styling over pure practicality. Notably, special variants like the Night Edition have already debuted in overseas markets, hinting at potential personalized options for the Malaysian market in the future.

As the core competitive advantage of the new model, the powertrain is expected to offer two options, accurately catering to Malaysian consumers across different budget brackets. The HEV hybrid variant is the primary highlight, featuring a hybrid system that pairs a 1.5L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine (codenamed 2NR-VEX) with an electric motor. The engine produces 91 PS, while the electric motor contributes an additional 80 PS, resulting in a combined system output of 111 PS managed by an e-CVT transmission. Fuel consumption is impressively low, ranging from 3.8 to 4.0L per 100 km (approximately 26.3 km/L). Given the current fluctuating fuel prices in Malaysia, this efficiency holds significant appeal. Furthermore, the system's ability to frequently switch to pure electric mode at low speeds or in heavy traffic ensures a quieter and smoother driving experience.

The entry-level 1.5L naturally aspirated variant is equipped with the 2NR-VE four-cylinder engine, delivering a maximum output of 106 PS and peak torque of 138 Nm, paired with a CVT transmission. This powertrain emphasizes reliability, durability, and cost-efficiency, with low maintenance costs that make it an ideal choice for budget-conscious commuters.

Inside, the cabin reflects Toyota's signature pragmatism. The new model is expected to feature a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Higher-spec trims may also include premium additions such as a panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charger, and a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, further elevating its value proposition.

In terms of safety, the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) active safety suite is expected to be a headline feature for higher-end variants, incorporating functions such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Entry-level models will likely retain essential safety kit, including six airbags and vehicle stability control (VSC), ensuring a solid balance of protection and practicality across the range.

In terms of pricing, market analysts in Malaysia generally predict that the starting price for the all-new Yaris Cross will be kept under RM 100,000. If this pricing strategy is realized, it will pose a challenge to popular rivals like the Perodua models and Honda HR-V, and may even affect the sales of Toyota's own Corolla Cross.

When compared to other hybrid models in its class, such as the Nissan Kicks e-POWER, the Yaris Cross HEV holds a distinct advantage in fuel economy. Its reputation for brand reliability and cabin practicality further positions it as a top contender for urban families in Malaysia seeking a dependable daily commuter SUV.
