All-New 2026 Mazda CX-5 RHD: 2.5L AWD Only, Coming to Malaysia?

The all-new third-generation 2026 Mazda CX-5 right-hand-drive version has made its official debut. Marking the first comprehensive redesign since 2017, the new vehicle has undergone extensive upgrades from its body structure to technological configurations. While Australia is slated to receive the model mid-year, Malaysia — following Mazda's typical regional rollout strategy — is expected to welcome this redesigned mid-size SUV by late 2026 at the earliest.

Powertrain Strategy: Streamlined Lineup, Unified 2.5L + AWD

The powertrain lineup has been significantly streamlined, seeing the departure of both the entry-level 2.0L engine and the high-performance 2.5L Turbo variant. The entire range now offers a single configuration — a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive included as standard across all variants.

To meet increasingly stringent emission regulations, this engine has been tuned to deliver a maximum output of approximately 177 hp and a peak torque of 242 Nm. While this represents a slight reduction in power compared to the outgoing model, it ensures better environmental compliance. Official combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.4L/100km, a figure that remains competitive within its segment. Furthermore, Mazda has confirmed that a hybrid CX-5 featuring the next-generation Skyactiv-Z technology is slated for 2027 or 2028, marking the model's official entry into the electrification race.

Size Upgrade: Comprehensive Expansion of Dimensions and Interior Space

The next-generation CX-5 has grown significantly in size, now measuring 4,690 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,695 mm in height. Most notably, the wheelbase has been extended to 2,815 mm — a substantial 115 mm increase over the outgoing model.

These expanded dimensions translate into tangible practical benefits: more generous rear legroom, increased cargo capacity, and wider door openings. Furthermore, over half of the chassis architecture has been redesigned, perfectly balancing Mazda's signature driving dynamics with superior ride comfort. Now that its size is more in line with Malaysian market leaders like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, the CX-5 boasts a much stronger competitive edge.

Interior Renewal: Modern Minimalism Balancing Technology and Craftsmanship

The interior has undergone a complete overhaul, effectively shedding the "dated" aesthetic of the outgoing model. The entire lineup now features a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, complemented by a 12.9-inch central infotainment display. The top-spec variant takes it a step further with a massive 15.6-inch screen, significantly elevating the cabin's high-tech appeal.

However, there are two minor drawbacks to note: first, the Google Built-in system is absent, meaning features like Google Assistant and integrated Google Maps are unavailable. Second, the entry-level variant omits wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, requiring a USB-C connection, whereas mid-to-high-end trims retain full wireless connectivity. Despite these points, the overall design stays true to Mazda's signature minimalism while integrating modern elements to strike a perfect balance between premium texture and daily practicality.

Configuration and Pricing: Strategic Market Adaptation with a Clear Competitive Edge

The equipment list reflects a strategy of "simultaneous upgrades and streamlining". While practical additions like a 360-degree panoramic camera and heated rear seats are now included, certain features previously seen as standard — such as the Head-Up Display (HUD), rear USB ports, and the panoramic sunroof — have been moved exclusively to mid-to-high-end trims. This shift highlights Mazda's strategic approach to cost management.

In the Australian market, the entry-level variant starts at 39,990 AUD, which is approximately RM 109,400 (excluding on-road costs). Mazda's core strategy is clear: leveraging this aggressive price point to undercut hybrid competitors in the same segment.

Malaysia Market Outlook: Year-End Launch to Ignite Mid-Size SUV Competition

At a time when hybrid models have dominated the mainstream, Mazda's commitment to a pure internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrain may seem counter-intuitive. However, this strategy effectively lowers the entry barrier for consumers seeking a premium Mazda mid-size SUV equipped with AWD. If it makes its Malaysian debut by the end of the year as expected, this completely redesigned CX-5 is set to ignite a fierce new round of competition against established rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Nissan X-Trail.
