Tesla Model Y L Expected to Land in Malaysia: Everything to Know About the Extended 6-Seater SUV

The Tesla Model Y L is accelerating its expansion across right-hand-drive (RHD) markets, following its ASEAN debut at the ongoing Bangkok International Motor Show in Thailand. As the likelihood of a Malaysian launch continues to grow, Tesla's departure from its usual global simultaneous launch in favor of this phased rollout strategy has sparked speculation within the local automotive industry.

This extended variant is very different from the regular Model Y. Drawing from specifications in the Chinese and Thai markets, the "L" version features comprehensive upgrades in dimensions, interior space, and premium features, making it more suitable for family users and multi-passenger travel.

Unlike the standard Model Y's multi-trim strategy, the Model Y L is offered exclusively as a high-performance All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant across the entire lineup. In terms of dimensions, it is 177 mm longer and 44 mm taller, with a 149 mm wheelbase extension. These upgrades effectively push the vehicle into the mid-to-large SUV category, freeing up the interior volume required to accommodate a functional third row of seats.

The rear roof has been subtly elevated, effectively alleviating the cramped headroom often associated with the standard Model Y's sloping "fastback" profile. However, this adjustment results in a slightly more "bloated" rear silhouette. Notably, the dimensions of the Model Y L remain consistent across both the Chinese and Thai markets, signaling Tesla’s commitment to unified global specifications for this extended variant.

The cabin is where the Model Y L truly sets itself apart. Departing from the standard model's 5-seat layout, the "L" version introduces a 2+2+2 six-seat layout. The second row features independent seats with heating and ventilation functions. Moving to the rear, the third row offers full-sized headrests and genuine utility, proving far more practical than the cramped "jump seat" designs found in the 7-seat versions sold in Europe and the U.S.

In terms of storage space, the Model Y L offers a maximum cargo space of 2,539 liters, which is more than the 2,138 liters of the standard version, and it can still accomodate carry-on luggage with all six seats occupied.

The exterior also receives a bespoke touch with the introduction of Cosmic Silver (a refined hue reminiscent of champagne gold) paired with 19-inch wheels. Inside, Tesla has streamlined the palette by making the Zen Grey interior standard while removing the white option. This move not only simplifies the lineup but also creates a unique, highly recognizable identity for the "L" variant.

In terms of power, the Model Y L is powered by an 82kWh NMC battery, with a WLTP range of 681km — a significant leap over the standard variant. While its battery specifications are identical to those found in the Chinese market, the range figures differ primarily due to testing standards. The dual-motor system has a maximum power of 340kW, accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in 5.0 seconds, slightly slower than the regular version.

In terms of configuration, the Model Y L has introduced a number of upgrades: the front seats now feature extendable thigh support, the chassis has been bolstered with adaptive dampers, the sound system is upgraded from 15 speakers to 18 speakers, and the central infotainment display is increased to 16 inches, greatly improving comfort and user experience.

In the Thai market, the Model Y L is priced at approximately RM242,200, slightly lower than the local regular version, which is different from the pricing strategy in the Chinese market. Based on the current price of the 5-seat version in Malaysia, it is expected to priced below RM240,000 after its launch.

While pre-orders have already officially opened in Thailand following its ASEAN debut, Tesla Malaysia has yet to announce a firm launch date. However, given the rapid rollout across regional right-hand-drive markets, an official announcement is expected in the near term.
