Tesla Model Y L Malaysia Launch: The 681km Long-Wheelbase 6-Seater Arrives This April 1

Tesla Malaysia recently hosted an exclusive preview of the all-new Tesla Model Y L at its Cyberjaya headquarters. Originally developed as a China-exclusive variant, the Model Y L has now successfully transitioned to Right-Hand Drive (RHD) configuration for global expansion. Following its recent rollout in Australia and Thailand, Malaysia is slated for the official market launch this Wednesday, April 1.

How Much Bigger is the "L"?

As the name suggests, the Model Y L focuses on "Length". Compared to the standard Model Y, the L variant sees a substantial expansion in its footprint:

Length: 4,976 mm (+179mm)

Wheelbase: 3,040 mm (+150mm)

Height: 1,668 mm (+44mm)

Despite the upsized dimensions, the vehicle maintains well-proportioned aesthetics in the flesh. Aerodynamics have also been optimized rather than compromised; thanks to a recontoured rear and a subtle black Gurney-style spoiler, the Model Y L achieves a low drag coefficient of 0.216 Cd. This makes the larger variant even more "slippery" through the air than its standard sibling.

Key Highlight: 2-2-2 Six-Seater Layout

Moving away from the standard 5-seater or the global 7-seater options, the Model Y L adopts a 2-2-2 configuration.

Individual Second-Row Seats: These are the much-coveted Captain Seats, featuring power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and auto-retracting armrests.

Second-Row Captain Chairs: The middle row is the cabin's centerpiece. Two individual power-adjustable captain seats support heating, ventilation, and comes with auto-retracting armrests.

Genuine Third-Row Utility: Thanks to the 3,040 mm extended wheelbase, the third row is no longer a "token" addition. A 175 cm adult still enjoys approximately three fingers of headroom. While the raised floor dictates a slightly "knees-up" posture, the space remains perfectly functional for short-to-medium commutes.

Enhanced Accessibility & Versatility: A center aisle facilitates effortless "walk-through" access to the rear. For cargo needs, both the second and third rows feature one-touch power-folding functionality, allowing the cabin to transform into a flat-floor hauler in seconds.

Premium Upgrades: More Than Just a Stretched Chassis

To justify its flagship positioning, the Model Y L packs a series of hardware enhancements that elevate it above the standard lineup:

Adaptive Damping: The variable damping system features dedicated "Balanced" and "Rear Comfort" modes. This addresses the "stiff" ride quality often associated with Tesla’s standard chassis, offering a much more compliant experience for rear-seat passengers.

Interior Evolution: The front seats now feature power-extendable thigh supports; wireless charging pads are upgraded (50W+30W) with active fan cooling; and the audio system is bumped up to 18 speakers.

Exclusive Aesthetics: The preview unit showcased the model-exclusive Cosmic Silver paint (a premium optional extra), complemented by the new 19-inch Machina alloy wheels.

Performance & Range

Under the skin, the Model Y L is a Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) powerhouse, capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds. With a larger battery capacity, its WLTP range reaches an impressive 681 km, the second longest in the local Model Y lineup after the Long Range RWD.

Pricing Strategy: How Much Will It Be?

The ultimate question remains: How much is it? Global pricing for the Model Y L presents a fascinating puzzle. In Australia, it commands a RM17,000 premium over the Long Range AWD, yet in Thailand, it arrived with a "bombshell" price tag that actually undercuts its 5-seater sibling. With the current Malaysian Long Range AWD priced at RM242k, the industry is divided. Will Tesla Malaysia launch a predatory pricing strike, positioning this 6-seater giant under the RM240,000 mark to grab market share from premium ICE rivals? Or will its flagship status see it soar past RM250,000?

If you're in the market for a 6-seater SUV, hold your breath for another 48 hours. We’ll find out exactly what Tesla Malaysia has in store for us this Wednesday, April 1.
