On April 2, 2026, Tesla released its global production and delivery report for the first quarter of 2026. Despite fierce competition in the global electric vehicle market, Tesla delivered a steady performance: global deliveries reached over 358,000 units in Q1 (up 6.5% YoY), while production exceeded 408,000 units (up 12.7% YoY).

Model Y Remains the "Eternal King"

According to the latest statistics, after claiming the global passenger car sales crown in 2025, the Model Y has carried its strong momentum into early 2026, with cumulative sales now surpassing 4 million units. Meanwhile, the Model 3, a popular choice among Malaysian first-time buyers, has officially crossed the 3 million cumulative sales mark, coinciding with its tenth anniversary.

Strong Performance in Asia-Pacific: Gigafactory Shanghai Plays a Key Role

As the primary production base for Malaysian-spec Tesla vehicles, Gigafactory Shanghai delivered a strong performance in the first quarter of 2026, producing 213,000 units — a 23.5% year-on-year increase. Notably, the Shanghai plant exported more than 50,000 units of Model 3 and Model Y in January alone, ensuring a stable supply for Asia-Pacific markets, including Malaysia.

What Does This Mean for Malaysian Owners?

Beyond global growth, here are three key points most relevant to Malaysian Tesla owners:

Tesla has announced the opening of a cross-border charging and service network linking Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Malaysian owners can now conveniently access 75 Superchargers (370 stalls in total) across the region and enjoy cross-border warranty services.

Model Y L Arrives in Malaysia: Following its local debut, the Model Y L is set to begin deliveries in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026. It offers an impressive WLTP range of up to 681 km, with estimated pricing starting from RM260,000.

In support of the government's BEV initiatives, several Tesla Superchargers in Malaysia, including those at Pavilion KL and IOI City Mall, are now open to non-Tesla vehicles. While competition is increasing, Tesla maintains a global network of over 75,000 chargers with an outstanding real-time uptime of 99.95%, making it the most reliable charging option for local owners.

Summary

Tesla's steady Q1 2026 performance demonstrates that its "moat" in software and charging infrastructure remains solid. With more new models making their way to Malaysia and the continued expansion of the charging network in Johor, Penang, and Perak, the heat in the local EV market is set to rise even further.
