Who would have thought that in Britain — the land of traditional motoring values and stiff upper lip — the top spot in March would go to a Chinese newcomer, the Jaecoo J7, rather than Ford or Nissan?

According to data from Autocar, the Jaecoo J7 (sold simply as the Jaecoo 7 in the UK) registered an impressive 10,064 units in March, dethroning established heavyweights such as the Ford Puma (9,193 units) and the Kia Sportage (7,310 units). This marks the first time in history that a Chinese car has claimed the number one spot in the UK's highly mature and notoriously discerning automotive market.

The numbers are staggering for a brand that only launched in the UK in January 2025.
YTD Performance: The Jaecoo 7 currently sits in 2nd place for 2026 with 15,569 units sold year-to-date, breathing down the neck of the segment leader, the Ford Puma (16,128 units).
The "Range Rover" Effect: UK media has nicknamed the Jaecoo 7 the "affordable Range Rover". British buyers appear to be attracted to its premium design and styling at a much more accessible price.

While the Jaecoo J7 has become a "rockstar" in the UK, its performance back home in Malaysia has been noticeably more subdued. In March, the SUV finished 19th in the local rankings, and currently sits in 20th place year-to-date. Despite local CKD assembly and competitive pricing starting from RM138k, Jaecoo still has a long way to go before it can replicate the "Jaecoo-mania" seen in Britain.
