2026 Intelligent Electric Vehicle Development Forum, Geely demonstrated its technological strength with methanol-powered vehicles and a range of high-end EVs. The biggest highlight was the official launch of its next-generation i-HEV Intelligent Hybrid technology on April 13.

According to Geely Senior Vice President Yang Xueliang, the i-HEV system is the world's first hybrid powertrain to feature "AI Cloud Power". Unlike conventional mechanical hybrid systems, it leverages advanced AI algorithms to intelligently optimise energy management in real time.
Ultra-low Fuel Consumption: The system achieves fuel economy as low as 3L/100km, surpassing many current Japanese hybrid benchmarks in the market.
Enhanced Performance: Total system output has been increased by more than 20% compared to mainstream HEV models.

Beyond its hybrid technology, Geely's premium brand Zeekr also stole the spotlight at the forum. While the Zeekr 009 served as the official vehicle for the event, the all-new Zeekr 9X and Zeekr 8X made their public appearances. The Zeekr 8X, in particular, impressed with its "supercar-level" performance and outstanding energy efficiency.

Geely Chairman Li Shufu reaffirmed his commitment to methanol-powered vehicles via video link. He emphasised that methanol offers significant advantages, including lighter vehicle weight, substantial carbon emission reduction, and excellent cost-efficiency. Li Shufu views methanol as a vital and practical pathway for the new energy transition, applicable to both passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

For Malaysian readers, Geely's technological direction often serves as a strong indicator of what may soon arrive at Proton. With the upcoming rationalisation of fuel subsidies in Malaysia, Geely's new "high-performance, low-consumption" i-HEV technology is particularly relevant. If this 3L/100km hybrid system eventually finds its way into future Proton SUVs or sedans, it could become a true game-changer for the local hybrid market.
