2028 Nissan Skyline Teased with Retro Styling: Could This Herald the R36 GT-R?

Nissan has sent a jolt of excitement through the automotive world with the surprise teaser of the all-new Skyline, confirming its return as a Japan-exclusive rear-wheel-drive performance sedan. Contrary to earlier speculation that the model would transform into an electric crossover, the 14th-generation Skyline stays true to its iconic sedan roots — marking a significant and nostalgic strategic pivot for the brand.

Unlike the previous generation, which was essentially a rebadged Infiniti Q50, the all-new 14th-generation Skyline features bespoke design elements with a strong retro flavour. The most celebrated return is at the rear, where the iconic quad round taillights — a signature once shared with the legendary GT-R — make a triumphant comeback. This single design cue has already sparked fervent discussion among enthusiasts worldwide.

The retro inspiration continues along the profile, with a high shoulder line that sweeps elegantly downward toward the rear, paying clear homage to the legendary second-generation "Hakosuka" Skyline. Additional heritage nods include the cursive "Skyline" badge on the rear fender and a front-end design that revives the interlocking "S" emblem and slim grille, reminiscent of models from the R30 generation onward. The grille is flanked by sharp, slim headlights featuring dual vertical daytime running light bars.

While Nissan has kept most technical specifications under wraps, reports from Japanese publication Best Car suggest the new Skyline will be based on the outgoing platform. Power is expected to come from the familiar VR30DDTT 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, producing 405 PS and 475 Nm of torque — the same unit found in the previous 400R and Nismo variants. This choice is reportedly due to the engine's relatively late introduction in the previous model's lifecycle.

The revival of the GT-R-style round taillights is the most tantalising clue yet, fuelling speculation that the next-generation R36 GT-R could once again be closely twinned with the Skyline. This prospect will be music to the ears of purists, although the future of the GT-R nameplate itself remains uncertain. Earlier rumours of an all-electric, solid-state battery-powered R36 have cooled amid a broader industry reassessment of electric sports cars, leaving the door open for some form of combustion power in the next "Godzilla".

The new Skyline forms a key part of Nissan's revamped product strategy, which categorises models into three segments: Heartbeat, Core, and Growth. The Skyline is designated a "Heartbeat" model for the Japanese market — defined as embodying "Nissan's identity, emotional value, and innovation". This sets it apart from volume-driven "Core" global models like the X-Trail and "Growth" models aimed at new market segments.

Although an official launch timeline has yet to be confirmed, Japanese publication Best Car reports that the new Skyline could debut as early as next year to celebrate the nameplate's 70th anniversary. For fans in Malaysia and around the world, this announcement reaffirms the Skyline's enduring legacy as a symbol of Japanese performance — even if it remains a "forbidden fruit" exclusive to the Japanese domestic market.
