The BYD Sealion family is growing. Following the Sealion 7, BYD has officially released images of the all-new Sealion 5, with a confirmed launch date of April 20.
While the Atto 3 remains BYD's primary focus in Malaysia, the debut of the new Sealion 5 has still sparked interest among local car enthusiasts. Positioned as a compact SUV, it boasts a more dynamic and modern design. It is also rumoured to be equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery and the advanced 5th-generation DM hybrid technology.

The Sealion 5 retains the brand's core design DNA while introducing significant front-end optimizations.
New Front Bumper: It features a more sculpted and aggressive design, highlighted by an Active Grille Shutter (AGS) that improves aerodynamics and enhances overall energy efficiency.

Side Profile: The side profile maintains a sleek and elegant silhouette with a distinctive floating roof design. Notably, the Sealion 5 features semi-hidden door handles, which are often preferred for their practical ergonomics over fully retractable ones.

Rear Highlights: The rear end features a redesigned through-type taillight assembly that delivers a more premium and distinctive lighting signature. This is complemented by a new rear bumper design that echoes the front styling.

The Sealion 5 measures 4,620 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,630 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,770 mm. Compared to the current Atto 3, it is slightly longer and boasts a superior wheelbase, resulting in better rear legroom — a key selling point for Malaysian families.
The cabin features BYD's signature rotating touchscreen as the centrepiece. The centre console is neatly laid out with dual wireless charging pads and twin cupholders. Interior materials are also expected to receive an upgrade, creating a more youthful and premium ambiance.

The highlight of the Sealion 5 lies in its powertrain versatility.
EV Version: It will be available with two high-output motor options — 200 kW and 240 kW. The model is highly anticipated to feature the second-generation Blade Battery paired with BYD's advanced flash charging technology, promising significantly reduced charging times.
DM-i Hybrid: The hybrid variant is powered by the latest fifth-generation DM technology, combining a 1.5L engine (74 kW) with a 120 kW electric motor. Battery options include 18.3 kWh and 26.6 kWh, focusing on ultra-low fuel consumption and exceptional overall range.
While BYD Malaysia is currently focusing on the Sealion 7, the Sealion 5 fills an important market gap in the compact SUV segment. If introduced at a competitive price — especially as a DM-i hybrid — it could pose a serious challenge to established C-segment rivals such as the Honda CR-V and Proton X70.
