All-New 2026 Mazda CX-5 Enters Production in Japan: More Space, 15.6-inch Screen, Malaysia Launch Expected in June

For Malaysian SUV seekers, one of the most significant pieces of news recently is the long-awaited arrival of the third-generation Mazda CX-5. As Mazda's global bestseller and a long-time favourite in Malaysia, this update is far more than just a simple facelift.

According to the latest reports, production of the new CX-5 has officially commenced at Mazda's plant in Japan. Local sources indicate that the Malaysian-spec model is expected to make its debut at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS 2026) in June, with physical units likely reaching showrooms by the third quarter of 2026.

Longer Wheelbase for More Space

While the CX-5 has always been praised for its excellent driving dynamics, its rear cabin space has often been a point of criticism for Malaysian families when compared to rivals like the Honda CR-V.

Mazda has directly addressed this concern by increasing the overall vehicle length to approximately 4,690 mm and significantly extending the wheelbase.

Rear Legroom: No longer a tight squeeze — fitting three adults comfortably for a "Balik Kampung" trip is now much more feasible.

Rear Door Opening: The model retains its nearly 90-degree wide door opening, making it easier to install child seats or for elderly passengers to get in and out.

Design: From "Refined" to "Commanding"

The Kodo design language remains, but it has evolved into a more mature and commanding aesthetic. The front grille is now more three-dimensional, delivering a stronger premium feel reminiscent of the flagship CX-60. The most noticeable change is at the rear, where the traditional circular logo has been replaced by bold "MAZDA" lettering — a signature element of the brand's new design direction.

Interior: 15.6-inch Mega Screen & Tech Upgrades

The cabin of the new CX-5 is highlighted by a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen, the largest ever fitted in a production Mazda.

Premium Quality: Extensive use of soft-touch materials and refined trimming ensures the CX-5 remains one of the leaders in interior luxury within its segment.

Modern Tech: It features a digital instrument cluster and a refreshed user interface, delivering a thoroughly modern driving experience while retaining essential physical dials for intuitive, eyes-on-the-road control.

Powertrain: 2.5L + 24V Mild Hybrid Leading the Way

The initial Malaysian batches of the new CX-5 are expected to feature the 2.5L Skyactiv-G engine paired with Mazda's 24V M Hybrid system. This setup prioritises smoothness and efficiency, making it particularly well-suited for the stop-and-go traffic conditions commonly found in the Klang Valley.

While the all-new Skyactiv-Z full hybrid system is slated for 2027, the current mild-hybrid powertrain offers proven reliability — a key "peace of mind" factor for Malaysian buyers who are cautious about long-term battery maintenance and servicing costs.

Is It Worth the Wait?

If you prioritise rear space, advanced technology, and a premium aesthetic, waiting for the June debut is definitely worth it. Mazda is not engaging in a price war. Instead, the company is doubling down on quality, refinement, and its "Jinba-Ittai" driving experience to appeal to more discerning buyers. The new CX-5 has evolved from a purely driver-centric SUV into a truly versatile and well-rounded family vehicle.
